Precautions<br />

General<br />

Extracts of the herb should be used with caution and should not be ingested<br />

in large amounts or over prolonged periods. Caution is required with the<br />

use of ethanol preparations of the leaves because of the presence of thujone<br />

and camphor (27). If symptoms worsen or persist for longer than 1 week or<br />

in any case of unclear symptoms, such as night sweats, increased body temperature<br />

or loss of weight, a physician should be consulted (98).<br />

Drug <strong>int</strong>eractions<br />

Salvia officinalis may <strong>int</strong>erfere with existing hypoglycaemic and anticonvulsant<br />

therapies, and may increase the sedative effects of simultaneously<br />

used drugs, and central effects of alcohol (95). S. officinalis may <strong>int</strong>erfere<br />

with absorption of iron and other minerals (98).<br />

Dosage forms<br />

Cut herb for infusions, ethanol extracts and distillates for gargles, rinses<br />

and other topical applications, as well as for <strong>int</strong>ernal use. In addition, the<br />

fresh plants may be pressed to yield a juice (38).<br />

Posology<br />

(Unless otherwise indicated)<br />

Internal. Daily dose: 4 g of drug or equivalent preparations (38). Infusion:<br />

one tablespoon of an infusion (4 g of the leaf) in 200 ml of boiling water,<br />

three times daily (38, 95). Tincture: 75 drops of a tincture (1:10 in 55% or<br />
