Graduate Study. The graduate program in Textile<br />

Arts and Costume Design leading to the Master of<br />

Fine Arts degree offers students opportunities for<br />

independent, creative, innovative interdisciplinary<br />

study combining design with anthropology, critical<br />

theory, consumer issues, art, engineering, the sciences<br />

and theater. Faculty work closely with students<br />

to build individual programs based upon a student’s<br />

specialized goals and interests in textile and costume<br />

design. Study in new technologies and experimental<br />

approaches are encouraged. Areas of<br />

emphasis include constructed textiles (off loom and<br />

woven), surface design, computer-integrated textile<br />

design, and functional, ethnographic, and aesthetic<br />

costumes. The Textile and Costume Study Collection,<br />

which houses over 8,500 artifacts, is a valuable<br />

resource in enriching studies emphasizing multi-cultural<br />

1. Introduction to Design (4)<br />

Lecture—4 hours. Introduction to the design discipline<br />

through readings, writing, visual problem solving,<br />

and critical analysis. Topics: design principles<br />

and elements, vocabulary, color theory, Gestalt principles,<br />

conceptualization strategies. Role of designer<br />

and products in contemporary culture including<br />

3. Photography for Designers (4)<br />

Studio—6 hours; lecture—2 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

course 1, 14, 15. Photography for designers with<br />

emphasis on 35mm camera photography, black and<br />

white processes, and darkroom techniques. Brief<br />

introduction to digital photography. The role of photography<br />

within society. Critical analysis of photographs.<br />

14. Design Drawing (4)<br />

Studio—5 hours; lecture—2 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

course 1; students with a background in drawing or<br />

Advanced Placement Art Studio units are encouraged<br />

to submit a portfolio for review to waive this<br />

course. Priority to Design majors. Drawing as a tool<br />

for design. Basic skills in objective observation and<br />

representation, including line, shape, tone, and<br />

space. Drawing as a tool for formulating and working<br />

through design problems.<br />

15. Form and Color (4)<br />

Studio—5 hours; lecture—2 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

course 1, 14 or consent of instructor. Priority to<br />

Design majors. Understanding color, form and composition<br />

as ways of communicating design concepts<br />

and content. Color theory, color mixing, interaction<br />

of color. Explores a variety of materials, media and<br />

presentation techniques.<br />

16. Graphic Design and Computer<br />

Technology (4)<br />

Studio—6 hours; lecture—1 hour. Prerequisite:<br />

course 1, 14, 15. Introduction to computers in<br />

design with emphasis on development of a general<br />

understanding of graphic design, including theory,<br />

practice, and technology. Includes principles of<br />

color, visual organization, visual hierarchy, typography,<br />

image enhancement. Projects created on Macintosh<br />

computers. Priority given to sophomore and<br />

junior Design students.<br />

21. Drafting and Perspective (4)<br />

Studio—8 hours. Prerequisite: course in drawing recommended.<br />

Creation of three-dimensional designs<br />

on two-dimensional surfaces.<br />

40A. History of Design: Ancient through<br />

Industrial Revolution (4)<br />

Lecture—4 hours. Prerequisite: course 1. Priority to<br />

Design majors. A social and stylistic history of<br />

design (crafts and industrial products, costume,<br />

architecture, landscape, graphics) up to the 19th<br />

century. Emphasis on changing methods of design<br />

and production in the 19th century. Field trip<br />

required. Not open for credit to students who have<br />

completed course 40 or course 140. GE credit:<br />

40B. History of Modern Design (4)<br />

Lecture—4 hours. Prerequisite: course 1; course 40A<br />

or art history through the 19th century recommended,<br />

or consent of instructor. Priority given to<br />

Design majors. Social and stylistic history of design<br />

(crafts and industrial products, costume, architecture,<br />

landscape, visual communication) from the mid-nineteenth<br />

century to the present. Emphasis on design<br />

reform and the growth of modernism in Europe and<br />

50. Model Making (4)<br />

Lecture—2 hours; studio—5 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

courses 1, 14, 15, 21 or consent of instructor. Priority<br />

to Design majors. Introduction to concepts, methods<br />

and materials for model making in design. The<br />

use of models for idea generation, as well as specifics<br />

for study models, semi-detailed and presentation<br />

60. Introduction to Surface Design (4)<br />

Lecture—2 hours; studio—5 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

courses 1, 14, 15. Priority to Design majors. Introduction<br />

to diverse methods for creating imagery, patterns,<br />

and textures on cloth. Explorations and<br />

experimentation with dyes and pigments, mechanical<br />

resists, color removing, and physical and chemical<br />

alterations of textile surfaces and structures.<br />

70. Introduction to Textile Design Structures<br />

(4)<br />

Lecture—2 hours; studio—5 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

course 1. Priority given to Design majors. Introduction<br />

to diverse methods for creating textile structures.<br />

Exploration of the creative potential of hand-constructed<br />

textiles, manipulation of fabric to create<br />

dimensional surfaces, and the basics of building and<br />

joining fabric structures. Only two units of credit to<br />

students who have completed courses 23 or 24. Not<br />

open for credit for students who have completed<br />

77. Introduction to Structural Design for<br />

Fashion (4)<br />

Lecture—2 hours; studio—5 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

courses 1, 14, 15, 70. Priority given to Design<br />

majors. The study and practice of designing clothing<br />

for the human body. Emphasis on flat pattern development,<br />

structural joining sequences and the development<br />

of three-dimensional garments from twodimensional<br />

drawings. Not open for credit to students<br />

who have completed course 77A.<br />

Advanced study and practice of designing clothing<br />

for the human body through pattern development<br />

and structural joining. Emphasis on draping techniques<br />

and advanced conceptualization for fashion<br />

113. Visual Communication: Digital<br />

Imaging (4)<br />

Lecture—2 hour; studio—5 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

courses 1, 13, 15, 16, or consent of instructor; priority<br />

to Design majors. Digital imaging for designers,<br />

combining theoretical perspectives with practical<br />

applications. Expansion of use and meaning of the<br />

single photographic image through collage techniques,<br />

grids, triptychs and image sequencing. Alteration<br />

of image meaning through the addition of<br />

115. Letterforms and Typography (4)<br />

Lecture—2 hours; studio—5 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

courses 1, 14, 15, 16. Fundamentals of letterforms<br />

and typography. Characteristics of typefaces, formatting<br />

and composition of type. Principles of legibility,<br />

visual hierarchy, rules and blocks, grids, and<br />

integration of type with images. Not available for<br />

credit to students having completed course 22.<br />

116. Visual Communication: Graphic<br />

Design Studio (4)<br />

Studio—5 hours; lecture—2 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

courses 1, 13, 14, 15, 16, 113, 115. Priority to<br />

Design majors. Through multiple, conceptually-linked<br />

assignments, this course focuses on the fundamental<br />

choices designers make in translating concepts into<br />

graphic form, taking projects from initial concept<br />

and research, to design strategies, to project resolution<br />

and audience reception. Not open for credit to<br />

students who have completed course 152 or 152A.<br />

117. Visual Communication: Internet and<br />

Interactive Design (4)<br />

Lecture—2 hours; studio—5 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

courses 1, 13, 14, 15, 16, 113, and 115. Priority<br />

to Design majors. Technical and conceptual aspects<br />

of creating interactive visual media for screen-based<br />

delivery, concentrating on web sites. Attention to<br />

conceptual framework, visual design, information<br />

architecture and interactivity. Researched and written<br />

pre-production materials required. Not open for<br />

credit to students who have completed course 153.<br />

127. Critical Issues in Design and Art:<br />

Environmental Consciousness (4)<br />

Lecture—2 hours; studio—4 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

course 1, Art 5 or Landscape Architecture 1 or consent<br />

of instructor. Analysis of responsible and sustainable<br />

design and art practice. Projects in visual and<br />

environmental arts addressing issues in renewable<br />

resources; working with nature, reuse/recycling,<br />

post-consumer products, reclamation, endangered<br />

sources, and new/alternative uses of products and<br />
