Course is designed to combine basic nuclear physics,<br />

chemistry, and biology into a comprehensive<br />

and vigorous lecture-laboratory experience in biomedical<br />

nuclear chemistry. Subjects include choice<br />

and purification of appropriate gamma and beta<br />

radioisotopes, compounding biological pharmacodynamics<br />

physics, radioactive decay; interaction of ionizing<br />

Clinical Activity—full time (2-6 weeks). Prerequisite:<br />

consent of instructor. Clerkship correlates radioisotopic<br />

methods with clinical, pathophysiological, and<br />

other diagnostic aspects of the patient’s care. Each<br />

Clinical activity—45 hours. Prerequisite: approval<br />

by School of Medicine Committee on Student Progress.<br />

Eight week general surgery clerkship includes<br />

GI, Burn, Oncology, Plastics, Vascular Cardiothoracic,<br />

consult, transplant and trauma. Clerkship<br />

assignments are at <strong>UC</strong>DMC. Daily core material presentations<br />

and reading assignments. Student involvement<br />

includes work-up and care of surgical patients.<br />

460A. Clinical Surgical Elective (6-18)<br />

Clinical activity—full time. Prerequisite: fourth-year<br />

medical student or third-year medical student with<br />

completion of course 430. Rotation through Surgery<br />

Specialty Clinics: Vascular, GI, GU, Thoracic, Plastic,<br />

Radiotherapy. Student works up one new and<br />

two return visit patients. Presents consult to on-site<br />

faculty. Weekly review with preceptor and course<br />

director. Reading assignments to add perspective for<br />

461. Surgery Burn Unit Clerkship (6 or 9)<br />

Clinical activity—full time (4 or 6 weeks). Prerequisite:<br />

Externship in the eight-bed Burn Unit, and the 80<br />

bed Shriners Hospital for Children. Principles of critical<br />

care, fluid and electrolyte resuscitation and management<br />

of surgical wounds in both adults and<br />

462. Surgery Trauma Service Clerkship (6<br />

or 9)<br />

Clinical activity—full time (4 or 6 weeks). Prerequisite:<br />

fourth-year medical student, or third-year medical<br />

works as an extern on one of the two general surgery<br />

Trauma teams, participating in resuscitation<br />

and management of critically injured patients. Team<br />

hours consist of 24 hours on, and 24 hours off. (H/<br />

463. Surgery Intensive Care Unit (6 or 9)<br />

Clinical activity—full time (4 or 6 weeks). Prerequisite:<br />

fourth-year medical student, or third-year medical<br />

student with completion of course 430. Student<br />

participates in direct supervision of critically ill surgical<br />

patients in a twelve-bed surgery ICU. Each student<br />

is closely supervised. Provides in-depth<br />

experience with management of critically ill patients.<br />

464. <strong>General</strong> Surgery Clerkship: Kaiser<br />

Hospital (6 or 9)<br />

Clinical activity—full time (4 or 6 weeks). Prerequisite:<br />

student with completion of course 430. Student<br />

participates with University residents on the teaching<br />

services at Kaiser Hospital, Sacramento. Opportunity<br />

to see larger number of practical, general surgical<br />

467. Surgical Oncology (3-9)<br />

Clinical activity—full time (2 to 6 weeks). Prerequisite:<br />

fourth-year medical student, or third-year medical<br />

student with completion of course 430. Students<br />

actively participate in management of patients<br />

requiring surgery for cancer, endocrine disease and<br />

selected general surgical problems. Cases include<br />

malignant melanoma, sarcomas, gastrointestinal<br />

cancer, head and neck pathology, and metastatic<br />

malignancies. Attending rounds daily. Four teaching<br />

468. Cardiothoracic Surgery Clerkship (6-9)<br />

Clinical activity—full time (4 to 6 weeks). Prerequisite:<br />

works as an extern on the Cardiothoracic Surgical<br />

Service, participating in perioperative management<br />

and operations on the heart, lungs, mediastinum,<br />

and other thoracic structures. Regularly scheduled<br />

469. Trauma Service: East Bay (6-9)<br />

Clinical activity—full time. Prerequisite: fourth-year<br />

at Highland <strong>General</strong> Hospital (Oakland) participating<br />

in resuscitation and management of critically<br />

470. <strong>General</strong> Surgery: East Bay (6-9)<br />

Clinical activity—full time. Prerequisite: fourth-year<br />

and participate in the pre-operative evaluation, intraoperative<br />

management, and post-operative care of<br />

operations of arterial and venous system, exclusive<br />

management of critically ill patients in the SICU, ICU<br />

474. Breast Disease (6)<br />

Clinical activity—full time (4 weeks). Prerequisite:<br />

third-year surgery clerkship, Medical Sciences 430.<br />

Students focus on aspects of benign and malignant<br />

breast disease working in the surgical oncology clinics,<br />

observing needle localization procedures, following<br />

patients to the O.R., working with<br />

radiologists in mammography, working in hematology-oncology<br />

clinics, and with pathologists reviewing<br />

475. Pediatric Surgery (6-9)<br />

Clinical activity—full time (4-6 weeks). Prerequisite:<br />

and electrolyte management in infants. <strong>General</strong><br />
