The Social Science Data Service (SSDS) is a unit of the Institute of<br />

Governmental Affairs (IGA). SSDS provides quantitative computing<br />

and consulting services in support of faculty and graduate students<br />

involved in social science research on the <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> campus.<br />

SSDS provides consulting services for the wide range of software<br />

used by social scientists and assists with questions regarding the<br />

use of SSDS computers and statistical and data-related programming.<br />

SSDS manages a UNIX system and a PC research lab used<br />

for quantitative social science computing. Specialized support is<br />

available for extramurally funded research projects managed by<br />

IGA.<br />

The Tahoe Environmental Research Center is dedicated to<br />

research, education and public outreach on lakes and their surrounding<br />

watersheds and airsheds. Lake ecosystems include the<br />

physical, biogeochemical and human environments, and the interactions<br />

among them. The Center is committed to providing objective<br />

scientific information for restoration and sustainable use of<br />

the Lake Tahoe Basin.<br />

The <strong>UC</strong> Agricultural Issues Center is a university-wide research<br />

and outreach unit that draws on expertise from many disciplines.<br />

The center focuses on California's agricultural issues related to science<br />

and technology, international trade and markets, agribusiness<br />

trends, rural-urban issues, natural resources and the environment,<br />

human resources and agricultural policy.<br />

The <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> Center for Plant Diversity provides information on<br />

the names, uses, toxicity and distribution of plants. Anyone can<br />

visit the Herbarium to use its dried plant collections (300,000<br />

specimens), botanical library and microscopes, but a phone call is<br />

suggested to make sure staff will be available to assist you. The<br />

collections are used most commonly to check plant identifications,<br />

but they are also used by campus faculty and students for teaching<br />

and research in plant systematics and ecology. Herbarium staff<br />

answer hundreds of public service requests each year (especially<br />

identification of weeds and poisonous plants). Collections include<br />

vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and algae. The majority of<br />

these specimens are angiosperms (flowering plants), mainly from<br />

California, but the collections are worldwide in scope, with strong<br />

holdings from North America, Ecuador, Baja California and<br />

regions with Mediterranean climate regimes. The herbarium is<br />

well known for its collection of weeds and poisonous plants,<br />

although it also has world-class collections of grasses, oaks and<br />

spurges. The Herbarium's support group, the <strong>Davis</strong> Botanical Society,<br />

hosts a wide range of botanical events, workshops and trips<br />

each year.<br />

The Energy Institute at <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> has been established for the purposes<br />

of focusing and coordinating energy research and education<br />

on the campus and facilitating interactions with other instates,<br />

laboratories and programs across the nation and around the world.<br />

The breadth and depth of energy research on the campus supports<br />

the vision for building a world-class institute in energy with particular<br />

focus on sustainable energy system design. The Institute<br />

will also serve as home to a new Energy Graduate Group providing<br />

advanced degrees in energy science, technology and policy.<br />

<strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> J. Amorocho Hydraulics Laboratory's research areas<br />

include engineering hydraulics, fisheries protection, and ecological<br />

and environmental hydraulics. <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> JAHL was built to<br />

perform hydraulic modeling studies for the California State Water<br />

Project in the 1960s. It has been conducting hydraulic investigations<br />

through scaled physical models, prototype models and<br />

numerical models to provide modeling service to federal, state,<br />

local water agencies and private entities. Recently conducted<br />

research include sturgeon passage study, debris removal/trashrack/<br />

traveling screen study, fish treadmill study of fish behaviors near<br />

long fish screens, Devil Canyon power plant afterbay hydraulics,<br />

and Gorman Creek flood control channel hydraulics, etc.<br />

<strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> JAHL has been actively participating in the development<br />

of solutions to fish protection technologies for the Bay Delta river<br />

system. Researchers in <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> JAHL, including fish biologists<br />

and hydraulic engineers, have many years of experience on testing<br />

Sacramento River and Bay Delta fish species under various hydraulic<br />

and environmental conditions. They also have extensive experience<br />

in handling invasive water plant species that occur in the<br />

Delta fish facilities, such as Egeria. Researchers at <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> JAHL,<br />

with the help of the state and federal agencies, has been pursuing<br />

the application of new fish protection technologies and developing<br />

a better understanding of the hydraulic and biological issues in the<br />

Sacramento River and Bay Delta system.<br />

The laboratory is recognized for its pioneering research on animal<br />

blood groups and biochemical polymorphisms. Current research<br />

activities include studies of genetics, genomic and forensic<br />

research of domestic and wildlife animal species, including horses,<br />

cattle, sheep, goats, camelids, dogs, cats, wild felids and canids,<br />

bears, birds and primates. Activities include DNA genotyping and<br />

mitochondria sequencing for applications in animal identification,<br />

parentage verification, forensic analyses, population structure and<br />

genetic diversity. Projects include, among others, mapping of phenotypic<br />

traits, coat color and disease genes in horse, dogs and cats;<br />

identification of causative mutations; development and validation<br />

of microsatellite and single nucleotide polymorphism markers for<br />

several species; development of robust diagnostic and genotyping
