The Major Program<br />
The major in Middle East/South Asia Studies offers<br />
a comparative understanding of the Middle East and<br />
South Asia, regions that have been integrally linked<br />
for centuries by trade, migration, exchange of scientific,<br />
mathematical, political and philosophical<br />
ideas, religion, literature, and art. These regions are<br />
connected in the modern period through similar and<br />
shared experiences of colonial rule, decolonization<br />
and nationalist struggle. Many of the major languages<br />
of the region, such as Arabic, Hindi-Urdu,<br />
Bengali, Persian, Punjabi, and Turkish, have heavily<br />
influenced each other. Religion is a significant force<br />
in the region binding people to sacred geographies,<br />
scripts, and genealogies. As opposed to presentist<br />
approaches which reproduce traditional area studies<br />
defined for strategic geopolitical interests, the<br />
Middle East/South Asia Studies major rethinks area<br />
studies through critical, comparative, historical, and<br />
sociological analyses of global interconnections of<br />
people, products, ideas, and processes. The major<br />
in Middle East/South Asia Studies offers students a<br />
unique opportunity to study exchanges, complementarities,<br />
and correspondences between these regions<br />
in religion, family structures, gender relations,<br />
media, literature and film, history, anthropology,<br />
law, political economy, international relations, development,<br />
urbanism, science and technology,<br />
diaspora studies, and other themes.<br />
