Research Center at Cornell University, prefaced his survey of <strong>Black</strong> <strong>Studies</strong><br />

in the City University of New York and the State University of New York<br />

with a discussion of the development of <strong>Black</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> as an area of scholarly<br />

inquiry. His preface serves as a useful introduction to the two essays<br />

that follow.<br />

The foundation is pleased to publish these essays. We are grateful to<br />

the three scholars who served as our consultants for the intelligence and<br />

commitment they brought to the project. We believe they have made a significant<br />

contribution to <strong>Black</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> and to all who have an interest in<br />

promoting the health and continuing growth of the field.<br />
