for storage at room temperature for about 3 weeks and for<br />

several months if the milk is stored at 4 to 5°C ( Nachreiner<br />

et al. , 1992 ). There is a difference in progesterone content<br />

among fore milk, composite milk, and strippings because<br />

<strong>of</strong> the variation in milk fat content ( Fig. 21-11 ) ( Garcia and<br />

Edqvist, 1990 ). This difference is less obvious when using<br />

skim milk for the immunoassay <strong>of</strong> progesterone, but the<br />

temperature must be controlled at centrifugation because<br />

warm butterfat will absorb progesterone more readily than<br />

cold butterfat ( Nachreiner et al. , 1992 ). A common recommendation<br />

for sampling <strong>of</strong> milk for analyses <strong>of</strong> progesterone<br />

is to obtain strippings after milking.<br />
