EQ 242 Stud Farm Management Practicum (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EQ 110<br />

Enrollment limited to nine students. Preference given to<br />

students who have completed EQ 181. Continued practical<br />

experience in stallion and bred and open mare management.<br />

We typically foal out a few mares requiring nights<br />

and weekend work at the farm for this class. This course<br />

may be repeated once for additional credit.<br />

EQ 250/350/450 Internship in Equine Studies (1-5 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EQ 109, 110. Student should complete<br />

sophomore year before planning an internship. Requires<br />

faculty permission.<br />

This course provides the opportunity for the student to gain<br />

valuable experience by participating in an actual working<br />

environment in his or her area of interest. Students are<br />

required to complete 75 hours of work for each credit hour<br />

registered and earned. An Internship Application must be<br />

completed and filed with the Office of Career Services and<br />

Internships.<br />

EQ 301 Stable Management in a Foreign Setting (2 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): IS 300. Must have <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> faculty<br />

advisor approval prior to registration<br />

Practical experience in daily horse care under the supervision<br />

of the staff of the APA approved site.<br />

EQ 306 Horsemanship in a Foreign Setting (2-4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): IS 300<br />

Development of riding skills and practice in horse training<br />

methods under the direction of the staff at an APA<br />

approved site. Adequate riding ability, as determined by the<br />

Division of Equine Studies faculty or the specific APA Site.<br />

Must have faculty advisor approval prior to registration.<br />

EQ 309 Breeding Farm Management in a Foreign Setting<br />

(2-4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): IS 300 and EQ 181<br />

Practical experience in the care and handling of breeding<br />

animals (stallions, mares, foals, weanlings and/or yearlings)<br />

under the supervision of the staff at an APA approved<br />

site. The type of experience may vary depending upon<br />

the specific farm and the time of year. Must have faculty<br />

advisor approval prior to registration.<br />

EQ 312 Principles and Theory of Competition (2 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EQ 109, EQ 110, EQR 102 or EQR 112<br />

This course will teach students the theory, principles and<br />

execution of skills necessary to prepare horses for competition<br />

at a national level. Students will learn to groom, clip,<br />

braid, outfit and exercise horses in a manner suitable to<br />

show at the highest levels. This course will be team taught<br />

by 2-3 instructors who specialize in the four disciplines<br />

offered in the equine program: hunters, jumpers, dressage,<br />

eventing. Students who successfully complete this course<br />

will acquire the professional skill sets to enable them to<br />

strengthen their employability as trainers, assistant trainers,<br />

barn managers and professional grooms.<br />

EQ 316 Methods and Materials of Teaching Riding I (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): Junior status and EQ 220<br />

A study of the effective means of teaching riding considering<br />

the physical and psychological factors involved. Students<br />

observe and assist <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> instructors in riding<br />

activity classes as well as practice teach under supervision.<br />

Emphasis on teaching beginner and low-intermediate skills.<br />

EQ 317 Methods and Materials of Teaching Riding II (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EQ 316<br />

A continuation of EQ 316; emphasis in teaching upper-level<br />

skills.<br />

EQ 320 Equine Nutrition (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EQ 109, 110, EQ 210<br />

A study of the requirements for a suitable diet for horses<br />

according to age and activity. Emphasis will be placed on<br />

evaluating the horse’s need for basic nutrients and how the<br />

feedstuffs are combined to form a quality diet.<br />

EQ 324 Pasture Management (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EQ 320<br />

This course will study the nutritional benefits and growing<br />

habits of many species of grasses and legumes, the<br />

horse’s natural foodstuff. Production and maintenance of<br />

productive pastures and hay crops including soil testing<br />

and environmental responsibility are emphasized. Lectures,<br />

guest speakers and field trips.<br />
