STUDENT HANDBOOK<br />
The Student Handbook is designed to furnish information about <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> policies, regulations, standards and<br />
services. It is intended as a guide to the privileges and responsibilities of membership in the <strong>College</strong> community. Each<br />
<strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> student is responsible for reading the Student Handbook so that he/she may understand the policies and<br />
regulations by which he/she is bound. Policies and regulations are subject to constant review and revision by students,<br />
staff, faculty and administration. The <strong>College</strong> reserves the right to change any provision, regulation or requirement set<br />
forth herein.<br />
CIVILITY STATEMENT<br />
Student Life Office of <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> promotes an environment of tolerance for others. Fostering a community based<br />
on civility toward one another which is guided by a principal of self-responsibility and accountability for actions. An<br />
environment rich in difference is vital to the <strong>College</strong> experience. In a community of scholarship and citizenship there<br />
is no place for hurtful behavior. Specifically:<br />
Safety/ Social Responsibility/ Accountability<br />
• <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> emphasizes the importance of individual responsibility and accountability in the lives of all students.<br />
• All members of the college community strive to create a positive environment through considerate conduct. A living<br />
community that promotes and adheres to all policies stated within the student handbook.<br />
Academics<br />
• It is the obligation of all community members to preserve an atmosphere conducive to the freedom to teach and<br />
to learn. The <strong>College</strong> is committed to creating and maintaining a positive learning and working environment both in<br />
and out of the classroom.<br />
• Students who submit academic work that is not their own are betraying the academic mission of the <strong>College</strong>.<br />
Diversity<br />
• Civility can be displayed when a person is willing to embrace diversity and respect individuals with differing backgrounds,<br />
beliefs, and cultures. All members of the <strong>College</strong> community are equal and accountable to each other. The<br />
<strong>College</strong> recognizes and welcomes a community comprised of diverse thought in order to provide an atmosphere of<br />
cross-cultural understanding so that we can better embrace diversity and celebrate difference.<br />
Respect<br />
• It is with understanding that each member of the community interact with one another according to the “Golden<br />
Rule” which is defined as “treating others how you would want to be treated.” Our community is guided by an<br />
underlining respect for self, others and property. It is believed that those residing in the community will coexist<br />
peacefully and understand that your personal choices do have an effect on the community as a whole.<br />
• Students/Faculty & Staff are encouraged to become involved members of the campus community in order to learn<br />
how to serve the greater good through their contributions as global citizens<br />
CODE OF CONDUCT<br />
The enrollment of a student shall be construed as both evidence and a pledge that the student accepts the standards,<br />
regulations and policies of <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> and agrees to abide by them. Conduct that interferes with the efforts of<br />
others to secure an education, enjoy a recreational event or to reside or participate in an environment that is safe, clean,<br />
quiet and conducive to study is prohibited. Students are required to show due respect and courtesy to their peers,<br />
faculty and staff at all times. The <strong>College</strong> reserves the right to impose disciplinary sanctions up to and including expulsion<br />
upon any student who refuses to or cannot abide by the standards, regulations, and policies set forth by the <strong>College</strong>.<br />
Responsible Behavior<br />
The philosophy of responsible behavior at <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> encompasses the developing maturity of each student, not<br />
only academically and socially, but also in the acceptance of responsibility for personal actions. The guidelines include<br />
an expectation that student behavior, both individual and collective, will convey a respect for the <strong>College</strong> community<br />
as a whole. The <strong>College</strong> does not intend to dictate conformity of its students and promotes the belief that personal<br />
freedom and expression are necessary components to the development of ethical and moral values. However, the<br />
<strong>College</strong> has the responsibility and the authority to establish standards of behavior for the <strong>College</strong> community. Similarly,<br />
the <strong>College</strong> will not condone violations of local, state, or federal laws on or off campus.<br />
