EDE 312 Early Childhood Field Experience I (2 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EDC 301<br />

The initial clinical hours of this experience are exploratory.<br />

Students will observe in schools, tutor students and assist<br />

teachers or other school personnel. They will become<br />

aware of the sociological environment of the school,<br />

center or agency as it interrelates to communities and<br />

families. Students should attend school/community events<br />

and participate as permitted. The remaining hours of the<br />

experience are focused and students will demonstrate<br />

appropriate developmental instructional methods and<br />

strategies for teaching across the curriculum.<br />

EDE 320 Mathematics in Early Childhood (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Students will become familiar with instructional strategies<br />

and appropriate use of technology in teaching mathematical<br />

concepts. An understanding of the spiraling nature of<br />

presenting those concepts will be developed. An emphasis<br />

on assessing the mathematical understanding of each child<br />

through the use of real life problems. While reviewing<br />

national and state standards, students will learn to teach<br />

mathematical concepts in a hands-on setting. Students<br />

will use the Ohio Academic Content Standards to frame<br />

mathematics instruction.<br />

EDE 323 Reading and Language Arts in Early Childhood<br />

(3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Teacher candidates for early childhood will be instructed<br />

in the methodology, strategies and techniques of teaching<br />

competencies in reading, writing, listening/visual<br />

literacy and oral communication. They will demonstrate<br />

proficiency in developing and implementing meaningful,<br />

integrated learning experiences to enhance reading and the<br />

language arts. Students will use the Ohio Academic Content<br />

Standards to frame reading and language arts instruction.<br />

EDE 410 Literature Based Reading (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

The literature-based reading course is designed to<br />

present reading instruction in a holistic framework. The<br />

pedagogical approach embodies a sociolinguistic as well as<br />

psycholinguistic perspective. Strands within the integrated<br />

curricula include literature-based reading, the reading/<br />

writing connection and thematic learning. Essential skills,<br />

strategies, story grammar and story schema are presented<br />

within context. Literature is selected from all genres and<br />

includes parallel cultures.<br />

EDE 412 Early Childhood Field Experience II (2 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): A grade of B or better in EDE 312 and<br />

successful completion of all requirements in Gate A<br />

This field is an intensive experience through which students<br />

will demonstrate their abilities to plan and execute<br />

lessons in social studies, science, reading, language arts,<br />

mathematics, health and fine arts. They will demonstrate<br />

the use of technology in teaching and learning episodes.<br />

Students should be given the opportunity to practice in<br />

inclusive clinical settings that reflect culturally, linguistically<br />

and academically diverse systems.<br />

EDE 422 Social Studies in Early Childhood (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Teaching social studies explores the interdisciplinary<br />

nature of history through an integrated curriculum. The<br />

development of historic literacy will be approached from a<br />

sociolinguistic perspective, incorporating critical thinking,<br />

language, reading, writing and the arts. Pedagogy will<br />

be presented in a conceptual framework applicable to<br />

the early childhood classroom using the Ohio Academic<br />

Content Standards.<br />

EDE 424 Science in Early Childhood (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Study and application of science processes in an inquiry<br />

setting. The student will understand the interdisciplinary<br />

nature of concepts in earth science, environmental science,<br />

life and physical sciences and relate to contemporary<br />

events. Emphasis is on planning instruction based on<br />

knowledge of the young child’s needs, using a variety of<br />

instructional strategies and materials as well as electronic<br />

educational technology to enhance hands-on laboratory<br />

activities. Students will demonstrate the use of the Ohio<br />

Academic Content Standards to frame science instruction.<br />

EDE 440-42 Student Teaching: Early Childhood (9 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): All professional education coursework<br />

and successful completion of all requirements in Gate B<br />

Student teaching is the culminating professional semester<br />

for the program. It is a full semester with a full school day<br />

supervised experience in selected area schools. Students<br />

will work with master teachers who will assist in assessing<br />

candidates’ progress as they practice teaching in early childhood<br />

levels. Students will demonstrate their proficiency<br />

in teaching with students of varying abilities. A grade of B<br />

or better must be attained in EDE 440-42 and EDE 443 in<br />

order to be recommended for licensure.<br />
