TH 100/200/300/400 Theatre Practicum I, II, III, IV<br />
(1 SH each)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall and Spring<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): Theatre concentration students only or<br />
permission of the instructor<br />
Participation in main stage theatre productions in the<br />
areas of acting, technical operations, stage management,<br />
running crew, etc.<br />
TH 104 Introduction to Theater (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall and Spring<br />
An overview of theatre in theory and practice including an<br />
introduction to dramatic forms, performance and technical<br />
theatre. Students will be involved in several short studio<br />
productions as part of the course.<br />
TH 106 Acting I (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall<br />
A studio course in basic acting skills which prepares the<br />
student for eventual work on dramatic scenes and plays.<br />
The course introduces the student to the major principles<br />
of Konstantin Stanislavski’s work on acting technique,<br />
utilizing exercises in physical action, given circumstances,<br />
imagination, attention, communion, sense of truth, scene<br />
analysis, tempo-rhythm and emotion memory.<br />
TH 107 Introduction to Technical Theatre (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Spring<br />
This course examines working in the theatre space by<br />
introducing students to tools, stage equipment, use of<br />
hardware, knowledge of materials, lighting, safety and<br />
current technology as it applies to creating a theatrical<br />
production.<br />
TH 108 Performance Theory and Analysis (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Spring odd years<br />
An introduction to some of the major theoretical models<br />
and tools for analysis of the theatrical event. This course<br />
is designed to prepare the student to look at a theatrical<br />
event from different critical perspectives and to think, speak<br />
and write about such events within a coherent theoretical<br />
framework. The course will include study of the writings of<br />
Aristotle, Stanislavski and Brecht, among others and will<br />
explore the cross-influence of anthropology, psychology, literary<br />
theory and biology with theatrical art. The application<br />
of theory will be studied in practical in-class performance.<br />
TH 160/260/360/460 Individual Investigation in Theatre<br />
(2-4 SH)<br />
A conference course dealing with individual intensive work<br />
in the following categories: playwriting, acting, directing,<br />
historical research, design, speech and film. Permission of<br />
the instructor is required. May be repeated.<br />

Theatre (2-4 SH)<br />
Theatrical topics of an advanced or specialized nature not<br />
covered in the regular course program are occasionally<br />
offered. Recent offerings have included African Theater,<br />
History of Musical Theater and Advanced Stage Lighting.<br />
TH 201 History of the Theatre I (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall even 4th year<br />
This course examines theater practices from the Greeks<br />
through the Renaissance, through the exploration of<br />
scripts, physical structures, conventions and biographies.<br />
The relationship between the theater and the society of<br />
the time is discussed.<br />
TH 202 History of the Theatre II (4 SH)<br />
The continuation of TH 201, covering theater practices to<br />
the early twentieth century. These two courses need not<br />
be taken in sequence.<br />
TH 203 Theatrical Makeup (4 SH)<br />
Theatrical stage makeup for the performer. The course<br />
is devoted to character analysis, application and design,<br />
through the skills and principles of applying makeup and<br />
adapting designs to fit the facial structure.<br />
TH 206 Acting II (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Spring odd years<br />
A studio course in scene study and performance. Through<br />
rehearsal and in-class performance of scenes selected from<br />
dramatic literature, students will learn how to apply basic<br />
acting skills to practical performance situations. Special<br />
emphasis is placed on practical analysis of a dramatic scene<br />
for its acting values and the actor’s technical approach to<br />
giving the scene creative life.<br />
TH 207 Dramatic Literature I (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall even 4th year<br />
A survey of some of the major dramatic works in world<br />
literature, from ancient Greece through the Renaissance.<br />
This seminar course includes reading, intensive group<br />
discussion and critical writing about theatrical play scripts.<br />
TH 208 Dramatic Literature II (4 SH)<br />
A continuation of Dramatic Literature I, this course surveys<br />
some of the major dramatic works in world literature, from<br />
the Renaissance through the present day. This seminar<br />
course includes reading, intensive group discussion and<br />
critical writing about theatrical play scripts.
