DN 101 Ballet Technique I (1 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Introduction to the vocabulary, techniques and theories of<br />

ballet. Emphasis placed on body alignment and efficient<br />

movement. May be taken twice for academic credit.<br />

DN 102 Modern Dance Technique and Theory I (1 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Study of the fundamental principles of modern dance.<br />

Emphasis on alignment, creativity, rhythm and the aesthetics<br />

of contemporary dance. May be taken twice for<br />

academic credit.<br />

DN 103 Jazz and Theater Dance I (1 SH)<br />

Exploration from among many of the styles and techniques<br />

of jazz dance. Emphasis on movement proficiency and<br />

diversity. May be taken twice for academic credit.<br />

DN 104 Dance in its Time (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall and Spring<br />

Exploration of the relationship among a number of the most<br />

significant contemporary choreographers and the cultural,<br />

philosophical, scientific and artistic environments in which<br />

they are created.<br />

DN 160/260/360/460 Individual Investigation in Dance<br />

(1-4 SH)<br />

Provides the student with the opportunity to explore an<br />

area of particular interest.<br />

DN 170-79/270-79/370-79/470-79 Special Topics in Dance<br />

(1-4 SH)<br />

Coursework designed to address the special interests of<br />

dance faculty and students. Topics could include eurhythmics,<br />

bartinieff fundamentals, laban movement analysis<br />

and lecture-demonstrations.<br />

DN 200 Body Wellness (2 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

This course involves guided explorations in movement<br />

fundamentals, relaxation techniques, exercises to increase<br />

strength, flexibility, ease of motion and dynamic alignment.<br />

The class consists of discussions on wellness, such as nutrition<br />

and stress reduction. Students participate in warm-up,<br />

aerobic workout and cool down through stretching. No<br />

dance experience is required.<br />

Study of the vocabulary, techniques and theories of ballet<br />

at the intermediate level. Emphasis placed on body alignment<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): Permission<br />

Study of the fundamental principles of modern dance at<br />

the intermediate level. Emphasis on alignment, creativity,<br />

rhythm and the aesthetics of contemporary dance. May<br />

Exploration from among many of the styles and techniques<br />

of jazz dance continued at the intermediate level. Emphasis<br />

on movement efficiency and diversity. May be taken twice<br />

DN 204 Hip Hop Dance (2 SH)<br />

Study of the fundamentals of the Hip Hop dance style.<br />

Emphasis is on the development of skills, familiarity with<br />

rhythm, freestyle and musicality. May be taken twice for<br />

academic credit.<br />

DN 210 Repertory and Performance Technique I (2 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Concurrent Requisite(s): DN 201/301/401 or DN<br />

202/302/402<br />

Student prepares for and performs in dance concert.<br />

Choreography is created by faculty and guest artists.<br />

DN 213 Dance History (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall odd years<br />

This course examines significant ways in which dance has<br />

functioned within various cultures from around the world,<br />

making comparisons and contrasts from among those<br />

cultures.<br />

DN 216 Anatomical Kinesiology (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

The exploration of the primary bones, joints and muscle<br />

groups that participate in vertical alignment and efficient<br />

movement. Explorations proceed with exercises designed<br />

to locate the positions and to experience the motions<br />

of these groups in the initiation of effective posture and<br />

efficient movement. Students in dance, athletics and riding<br />

may find this course of interest.
