SA 203 Sport Marketing and Communications (4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MN 200, SA 101<br />

A study of basic marketing and media concepts as they<br />

specifically relate to sports programs and organizations.<br />

Topics include promotions and public relations, sports<br />

consumer behavior, market analysis, marketing information<br />

management, marketing plans, sports journalism,<br />

broadcast communications and sponsorship.<br />

SA 204 Sports Communication (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall even years<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MN 200, SA 101<br />

Sport has been described as “one of the most pervasive<br />

social institutions in the United States” and its importance<br />

can easily be seen in terms of hourly news coverage, personal<br />

conversations, economic contributions, participant<br />

involvement, etc. This course focuses on how the communication<br />

of sports influences perceptions of social reality<br />

and individual and group identity. Our understanding of<br />

various communication concepts and research techniques<br />

will be built through the discussions and applications of<br />

the assigned reserved readings. Cross-listed as CM 204.<br />

SA 205 Sports Facility Planning, Operations and Management<br />

(4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MN 200, SA 101<br />

This course explores the management function as it relates<br />

to the operation of sports and recreation facilities, including<br />

public and private venues, non-profit and scholastic<br />

facilities, as well as aspects relative to larger arenas. The<br />

course explores the issues of security, risk evaluation and<br />

management and specific issues relevant to management<br />

of operations in a sports facility.<br />

SA 220 Sport Sociology (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall odd years<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MN 200, SA 101<br />

This course provides students with an understanding of the<br />

social aspects of sport, with emphasis on the interrelationship<br />

of sport and society. Students will be encourages to<br />

think critically on topics such as social values, education,<br />

religion, socialization, mass media, sexism and racism as<br />

they relate to the sports industry. Cross-listed as SO 220.<br />

SA 221 Sport Psychology (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring even years<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MN 200<br />

This course provides students with an introduction to<br />

the application of psychological principles to sport settings.<br />

Topics addressed in the course include motivation,<br />

leadership, anxiety management, teamwork, visualization,<br />

personality issues in sport and performance management.<br />

SA 250/350/450 Internship in Sport Management (1-5 SH)<br />

This course provides the opportunity for students to gain<br />

valuable experience by participating in an actual working<br />

environment in his or her own area of interest. Students<br />

are required to complete 75 hours of work for each credit<br />

hour registered and earned. An Internship Application<br />

must be completed and filed with the Office of Career<br />

Services and Internships.<br />

SA 305 Management Issues in the Sports Industry (4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MN 200, SA 101<br />

Examines management issues as they relate to sports<br />

departments and organizations. Topics include league<br />

operations, governance, the role and impact of the media,<br />

labor/management issues, licensing, financing, resource<br />

planning, strategy, scheduling, program development and<br />

sponsorship. At the collegiate level, topics will include an<br />

overview of the organizational structure of the intercollegiate<br />

athletic department, conferences, Title IX/gender<br />

equity and the NCAA.<br />

SA 311 Sports Events, Promotion and Sales Management<br />

(4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall odd years<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MN 200, SA 101<br />

This course is designed to provide students with the theory,<br />

the conceptual framework and the practices associated<br />

with organization, promotion and sales associated with<br />

sporting events and associated products. Content includes<br />

rationale and benefits of promotion and sales, sponsorship<br />

proposals, licensing programs and solicitation of sponsors.<br />

SA 315 Legal Issues in Sports (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): SA 101, MN 200<br />

A presentation of the basic legal issues and interpretation of<br />

the law as it applies to sports and recreation. Topics include<br />

contracts, torts, regulation of sports, legal terminology<br />

and legal principles as applied to the administration and<br />

management of sports programs. Emphasis is on identifying<br />

and analyzing legal issues, the implications of those issues<br />

and the options for limiting the liability of sports organizations.<br />
