GR 301 German for the Professional Environment (4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

This course serves as an introduction to the professional<br />

culture of Germanophone countries and societies. Students<br />

will prepare for a successful professional experience abroad<br />

or in a multinational organization in the U.S. Topics and<br />

learning outcomes will include creating a resume or curriculum<br />

vita in the second language, proficiency in basic<br />

professional correspondence, familiarity with different<br />

types of enterprises, organizational structures, marketing,<br />

banking and finance, accounting, the employment market,<br />

insurance, daily activities in an office, economics, transportation,<br />

information technology applications, etiquette in a<br />

variety of professional situations, shipping and customs,<br />

etc. Interactive work with visual media and IT applications<br />

is emphasized, and the course will be taught primarily in<br />

the target language.<br />

GR 302 German Phonetics and Pronunciation (1 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 102 or permission of instructor<br />

Exercises in the pronunciation of standard German<br />

through learning the International Phonetic Alphabet,<br />

linking of written German (graphemes) and spoken sounds<br />

(phonemes), practice of difficult phonemes, practice of<br />

intonation, etc.<br />

GR 310 Studies in German Literature (4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 201<br />

A course dealing with particular periods, movements or<br />

individual authors as announced in the schedule. Taught<br />

in German or English.<br />

GR 311 German Composition (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 201<br />

Concise exercises in writing. Examples: summary, close<br />

reading, developing and arguing of a thesis, transitions,<br />

culturalized conclusions, business correspondence, email,<br />

grammar in context, etc.<br />

GR 320 Germanophone Literatures and Cultures (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring odd 4th year<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Study, discuss and write on cultural production (literature,<br />

film, historiography, intellectual movements, particular<br />

contributions, etc.) from countries that use German as an<br />

everyday medium of communication.<br />

GR 401 Translation Studies in German (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall odd 4th year<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Study the theory of translation. Put the theory into practice<br />

through translation GRom and into German of literary,<br />

business, technical and academic texts.<br />

GR 402 Germanophone Intellectual History (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring odd 4th year<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Study, discuss and write on such periods and movements<br />

as the Middle Ages, Reformation, Marxism and Socialism,<br />

Romanticism, Realism, Modernism, Feminism, Expressionism,<br />

etc.<br />

GR 410 Germanophone Literatures in English Translation<br />

(3 SH)<br />

Study, discuss and write on translations into English of such<br />

canonical writers as Goethe, Schiller, von Hoffmannsthal,<br />

Kleist, Kafka, Brecht, Hesse, Rilke, Thomas Mann, Dürrenmatt,<br />

Stefan Zweig, etc.<br />

GR 411 Germanophone Women Writers and Filmakers<br />

(3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring even 4th year<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Study, discuss and write on the important contributions<br />

to culture by such women as Hildegard von Bingen, Fanny<br />

Lewald, Clara Schumann, Claire von Glümer, Anna Seghers,<br />

Christa Wolf, Leni Riefenstahl, Helke Sander, Margarethe<br />

von Trotta, Monika Treut, Hannah Arendt, etc.<br />

GR 420 Germanophone Visual Arts, Music, Architecture<br />

(3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring even 4th year<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Study, discuss and write on the visual arts, music, architecture,<br />

artists, composers, styles, etc., that have come out of<br />

Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Examine the role these<br />

have played in the formation of culture.<br />

GR 421 Germanophone Cinema (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall odd 4th year<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Study, discuss and write on the history of film in Germany,<br />

major film producers, influential movements, famous performers,<br />

significant films, documentaries and lesser-known<br />

films produced in Germanophone countries and societies.<br />
