2. In the case of a second offense, and after administrative counseling, the Registrar will inform the VPAA of the<br />

student’s name and status. The VPAA will inform the student by email and U.S. Mail that his/her file regarding<br />

academic dishonesty has been referred to Academic Standards Committee for review and recommendation. The<br />

VPAA will ask the Registrar to forward all applicable information to the Academic Standards Committee requesting<br />

recommendation regarding appropriate action.<br />

The Academic Standards Committee will meet to review the file and determine whether to recommend expulsion<br />

and will forward recommendation to the VPAA for final decision on the issue. The VPAA will notify the Registrar of<br />

the final decision and the Registrar’s Office will record the outcome in the student’s file with a copy to Academic<br />

Standards Committee. The Registrar will formally notify the student of the <strong>College</strong>’s decision and include a description<br />

of the appeals procedure.<br />

If a student is dismissed for academic dishonesty, the transcript will read “Academic Expulsion.”<br />

Specific Offense Appeals Procedure:<br />

1. The student must first contact the faculty member in an attempt to resolve the issue.<br />

Students must contact that faculty member immediately upon receiving notification of the imposed penalty for<br />

academic dishonesty.<br />

2. If the issue is not resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the faculty member and the student, the student must appeal<br />

to the Dean of the area.<br />

3. If the issue is still not resolved after consultation with the Dean of the area, the student must appeal in writing to<br />

the Academic Standards Committee (ASC) within one month of receiving notification of the imposed penalty for<br />

academic dishonesty. The student must present compelling documentation in writing.<br />

Expulsion Appeals Procedure:<br />

1. A student who receives a letter notifying him/her of expulsion from <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> for academic dishonesty will<br />

have ten (10) business days from the date of the letter to submit an appeal to the VPAA. To file an appeal, the<br />

student must provide evidence demonstrating that he/she was not provided adequate process or that there was<br />

some serious injustice in the decision.<br />

2. The VPAA will provide a copy of the student’s appeal to the Chair of the Academic Standards Committee. The Committee<br />

will appoint an appeals committee to include five faculty members two of whom are members of Academic<br />

Standards. The Appeals Committee will provide a written recommendation to the VPAA within ten (10) days.<br />

3. The VPAA will render a decision on the student’s appeal within ten (10) business days of receiving recommendation<br />

from the Appeals Committee. The VPAA’s decision regarding an expulsion is final.<br />

4. The student may attend classes while his/her appeal is under consideration by the VPAA.<br />

5. Upon completion of the appeal process, should the decision regarding expulsion stand, the result will be permanent<br />

dismissal and the student may not return as a student in any capacity to <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong>. The student is responsible<br />

to pay any unpaid balances owed to the <strong>College</strong>. Failure to do so may be subject to additional charges and/or action.<br />

GRADUATION<br />

Latin Honors<br />

Graduation honors are given to students who have completed a minimum of 64 SH in residence with the following<br />

cumulative grade point averages:<br />

3.80 - 4.00 Summa Cum Laude<br />

3.60 - 3.79 Magna Cum Laude<br />

3.50 - 3.59 Cum Laude<br />

Latin honors are awarded at the time of degree completion. Latin honors are not recognized for students who choose<br />

to participate in the commencement ceremony prior to degree completion.<br />

Senior Residence Requirement<br />

Candidates for a degree must take 32 of their last 36 semester hours at <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Degrees are not granted in<br />

absentia unless a special petition to the faculty is approved.<br />
