EQ 331 Equine Lameness and Conditioning (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EQ 210, EQ 320<br />

A study of the etiology, pathogenesis, signs, treatment and<br />

possible prevention of many musculoskeletal problems of<br />

the horse. Slides and x-rays are used to demonstrate normal<br />

and abnormal conditions. Prevention of lameness through<br />

proper conditioning will be discussed. Students routinely<br />

participate in care and management of school horses.<br />

EQ 340 Judging (2 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EQ 109, EQ 110, junior status<br />

The responsibilities of the judge in officiating at hunter,<br />

jumper, dressage shows and combined training events are<br />

discussed. The ability to recognize superior performance is<br />

developed and students have the opportunity to judge with<br />

recognized professionals under competitive conditions.<br />

EQ 401 Equine Venture Consulting (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): CI 101, AC 101 and senior status<br />

The course provides an introduction to the structural,<br />

financial, economic, managerial, legal and operational<br />

fundamentals of organizations, profit and non-profit. As<br />

the first in a series of courses related to Entrepreneurship<br />

and the Enterprise, this class will introduce you to the<br />

fundamentals of an enterprise and help you lean some of<br />

the basic management, structural and analysis tools that<br />

can influence your success. Whether you’re starting your<br />

own business or working within an existing organization,<br />

the course will use a series of real-life examples and case<br />

studies to develop your understanding of the enterprise<br />

and how it is managed.<br />

EQ 402 New Venture Creation for the Equine Industry (3<br />

SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EQ 401<br />

Requires a thorough research project culminating in the<br />

development of a finished plan for an equine small business<br />

venture. Students must present their plans with a thorough<br />

presentation to an outside board of professional experts.<br />

Students may work in teams or alone to complete the<br />

business plan.<br />

EQ 405 Equine Reproduction (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EQ 210, EQ 181,EQ 242 and EQ 320<br />

A lecture and laboratory course dealing with the study of<br />

the anatomy, physiology and endocrinology of the sexually<br />

mature mare and stallion. Breeding procedures, assisted<br />

reproductive techniques, management of the stallion<br />

and mare, infertility, parturition and neonatal care will be<br />

discussed.<br />

EQR 101 Riding Skills 1 (1 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): Permission<br />

Emphasis is on development of basic skills on the flat and<br />

over fences. Students may take any level equitation course<br />

more than once and earn up to six credits.<br />

EQR 102 Riding Skills II (1 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): Permission<br />

Emphasis is on development of basic skills on the flat and<br />

over fences. Students may take any level equitation course<br />

more than once and earn up to six credits.<br />

EQR 103 Riding Skills III (1 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): Permission<br />

Emphasis is on development of basic skills on the flat and<br />

over fences. Students may take any level equitation course<br />

more than once and earn up to six credits.<br />

EQR 112 Balanced Seat Equitation II (1 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): Permission<br />

Basic riding skills class to develop the strength, balance<br />

and foundation of the rider’s position. Course may be<br />

repeated for six hours maximum credit. These courses do<br />

not include jumping.<br />

EQR 113 Balanced Seat Equitation III (1 SH)<br />

Basic riding skills class to develop the strength, balance<br />

and foundation of the rider’s position. Course may be<br />

EQR 120 Introduction to Hunters and Theory (2 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): Successful completion of EQR 103 with<br />

a grade of A required<br />

Course offers the opportunity to learn how to ride a show<br />

hunter on the flat as well as how to execute a course of<br />

fences in a smooth, rhythmic style expected in the hunter<br />

show ring. This is the beginning of the series of hunter riding<br />

courses and is a prerequisite for EQR 121 Hunter I. Course<br />

may be repeated for six hours maximum credit.
