SO 348 Gender Roles (4 SH)<br />
An analysis of the socialization process and social patterns<br />
that assign different expectations and behavior by sex. The<br />
effects of various institutions, including schools, mass media,<br />
politics, the labor market and the military will be examined.<br />
SO 400 Senior Seminar (4 SH)<br />
A course designed to integrate and enlarge upon work<br />
taken in various sociology courses. The content is developed<br />
in conjunction with the instructor and involves a<br />
major research project.<br />

SP 101 Beginning Spanish I (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall and Spring<br />
This course is designed to emphasize listening, speaking,<br />
reading and writing. Grammatical structures, vocabulary<br />
and readings are presented as tools for developing communications<br />
skills. The course also aims to foster culture<br />
awareness of the Spanish-speaking world.<br />
SP 102 Beginning Spanish II (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall and Spring<br />
A continuation of Elementary Spanish I, the course focuses<br />
on the skills acquired in the first term, as students continue<br />
to develop their communicative language skills.<br />

Independent study of topics not offered as regular courses.<br />

SP 201 Intermediate Spanish I (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): SP 102 with a grade C- or better placement<br />
test.<br />
The first half of the one-year sequence in Intermediate<br />
Spanish. The course includes a review of the basic language<br />
structures and introduces advance structures. The course<br />
has a strong cultural component through an interactive<br />
classroom atmosphere.<br />
SP 202 Intermediate Spanish II (4 SH)<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): SP 201 with a grade C- or better<br />
This second half of the one-year sequence in Intermediate<br />
Spanish. The course includes a review of the basic language<br />

SP 220 Spanish Conversation and Composition (4 SH)<br />

The course is designed to develop skill and accuracy in<br />
spoken and written Spanish.<br />
SP 225 Hispanic Culture and Civilization (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): SP 202 with a grade C- or better, or<br />
interview.<br />
This course, conducted in Spanish, is an introduction to the<br />
study of the social and cultural histories of Hispanic communities<br />
in Latin America, Spain and the United States. We<br />
will discuss main cultural issues regarding gender, politics<br />
and economics in contemporary global society.<br />
SP 250/350/450 Internship in Spanish (1-5 SH)<br />
The department assists students in arranging internship<br />
opportunities with multinational companies both in the<br />
U.S. and abroad. Students may take internships during<br />
the semester as well as during the summer. Students are<br />
required to complete 75 hours of work for each credit hour<br />
registered and earned. An Internship Application must be<br />
completed and filed with the Office of Career Services and<br />
Internships.<br />
SP 300 Spanish Translation (4 SH)<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): SP 102 or permission of the instructor<br />
This course focuses on the assessment and translation of a<br />
variety of texts, including business documents, newspaper<br />
articles on current issues and literary texts. Oral presentations<br />
of student work are emphasized.<br />
SP 301 Spanish for the Professional Environment (4 SH)<br />
This course serves as an introduction to the professional<br />
culture of Hispanic countries and societies. Students will<br />
prepare for a successful professional experience abroad<br />
or in a multinational organization in the U.S. Topics and<br />
learning outcomes will include: creating a resume or curriculum<br />
vita in the second language, proficiency in basic<br />
professional correspondence, familiarity with different<br />
types of enterprises, organizational structures, marketing,<br />
banking and finance, accounting, the employment market,<br />
insurance, daily activities in an office, economics, transportation,<br />
information technology applications, etiquette in a<br />
variety of professional situations, shipping and customs,<br />
etc. Interactive work with visual media and IT applications<br />
is emphasized and the course will be taught primarily in<br />
the target language.<br />
