EDS 301 Child and Adolescent Development and Learning<br />

Study of the physical, psychological, cognitive, moral and<br />

social development of the human person from conception<br />

through adulthood.<br />

EDS 302 Assessment and Intervention for Mild to Moderate<br />

Special Needs (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

This course will focus on the administration and interpretation<br />

of formal and informal assessment instruments for<br />

students with mild/moderate exceptional learning needs.<br />

The course will emphasize the direct link between assessments<br />

and the design of appropriate interventions. It will<br />

address the relationship between assessment and the<br />

Individualized Education Plan as well as progress monitoring<br />

and Response to Intervention.<br />

EDS 310 Behavior Management and Intervention (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EDC 200, EDC 330<br />

This course emphasizes applied behavioral techniques<br />

to maximize learning, reduce behavioral problems and<br />

increase pupil-and-teacher rapport for students with mild/<br />

moderate educational needs. Course content and activities<br />

focus on the study of student needs and behaviors with<br />

identification of selected management methods. Management<br />

techniques are demonstrated and reviewed in class.<br />

EDS 312 Mild Moderate Intervention Specialist Field<br />

Experience I (2 SH )<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EDC 200, EDC 301, EDC 330<br />

The initial clinical hours of this experience are exploratory.<br />

Students will observe in schools, tutor students and assist<br />

teachers or other school personnel. They will become<br />

aware of the sociological environment of the school,<br />

center or agency as it interrelates to communities and<br />

families. Students should attend school/community events<br />

and participate as permitted. The remaining hours of the<br />

experience are focused and students will begin to practice<br />

appropriate developmental instructional methods and<br />

strategies that an intervention specialist is expected to<br />

provide.<br />

EDS 320 Collaboration and Transition Planning (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EDC 200, EDC 330<br />

This course focuses on research and productive strategies<br />

for establishing successful collaborative relationships with<br />

families, educators and other professionals. It fosters sensitivity<br />

to the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse<br />

families and cultures. Significance is placed on partnerships<br />

and networking with other professionals, paraprofessionals<br />

and families as team members designing, implementing<br />

and evaluating appropriate educational experiences.<br />

EDS 330 Curriculum and Materials for Mild to Moderate<br />

Special Needs (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EDC 200, EDC 330<br />

This course will review curriculum theory and development<br />

for programs for exceptional learners. It will address<br />

appropriate teaching strategies, curriculum sequences<br />

and materials selection, adaptation and evaluation most<br />

effective and efficient for classroom use.<br />

EDS 412 Mild Moderate Intervention Specialist Field<br />

Experience II (2 SH )<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EDC 200, EDC 330, A grade of B or better<br />

in EDS 312 and successful completion of all requirements<br />

in Gate A<br />

This field experience functions as a practicum with an<br />

opportunity for the student to work with experienced<br />

teachers and to practice the specific techniques they<br />

have learned in education core, assessment, curriculum,<br />

behavioral intervention and methods courses.<br />

EDS 440-42 Student Teaching: Mild Moderate Intervention<br />

Specialist (9 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EDC 200, EDC 330, All professional<br />

education coursework and successful completion of all<br />

requirements in Gate B<br />

Student teaching is the culminating professional semester<br />

for the program. It is a full semester with a full school day<br />

supervised experience in selected area schools. Students<br />

will work with master teachers who will assist in assessing<br />

candidates’ progress as they practice teaching and<br />

providing supplementary aids and services for students<br />

with disabilities in the classroom. A grade of B or better<br />

must be attained in EDS 440-42 and EDS 443 in order to<br />

be recommended for licensure.<br />
