SP 320 Introduction to Spanish Literature (4 SH)<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): One 100-course with a grade C- or better<br />
or permission of the instructor.<br />
This course, conducted in Spanish, will provide an overview<br />
of Spanish literature terms and concepts through literary<br />
texts. This course analyses contemporary literary genres<br />
such as novel, poetry, theatre and short story.<br />
SP 330 Spanish American Cinema (4 SH)<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): One 200-level course in Spanish.<br />
This course provides a survey of Spanish-American cinema<br />
which connects visual arts and cultural trends.<br />
SP 335 Spanish Art and Architecture (4 SH)<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): One 200-level course in Spanish.<br />
This course is an introduction to the twentieth and<br />
twenty-first centuries art practices and theories in the<br />
Spanish-speaking world. The emphasis will be given to the<br />
relationship between art, history and modernity.<br />
SP 338/339 Readings in Spanish Literature and Culture<br />
(4, 4 SH)<br />
An introduction to a variety of texts and their discussion in<br />
Spanish. Interactive oral exercises to build student fluency<br />
are emphasized. Offered on campus and at centers abroad.<br />
SP 340 Language and Study Abroad (4 SH)<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): SP 102 with a grade C- or better<br />
This class is taught in the context of the language study<br />
abroad program. It provides cultural and language skills<br />
while travelling abroad. The course deals with contemporary<br />
major political, social, economical and cultural issues<br />
of the country visited.<br />
SP 410 Spanish American Literature (4 SH)<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): One 200-level course in Spanish or<br />
permission of the instructor.<br />
This course provides a survey of Spanish American Literature.<br />
Particular attention will be given to the twenty-first<br />
century and the interstices between literature and social<br />
change. This is a course in which students will develop a<br />
critical thinking and writing.<br />
SP 411 Readings in Spanish Literature and Culture (4 SH)<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): One 200-level course in Spanish or<br />
permission of the instructor.<br />
This course focuses on a particular literary figure or topic<br />
of the Hispanic cultures. The materials covered during this<br />
class will allow interdisciplinary approaches. Students will<br />
be responsible for an intensive research and writing work.<br />
SP 490 Senior Research Project (4 SH)<br />
Students preparing a thesis take this course in their final<br />
semester of the year they are scheduled to graduate. The<br />
course will cover development of a written proposal in<br />
consultation with the faculty member of the student’s<br />
choice, weekly meetings with the thesis advisor to assess<br />
progress, develop thesis focus and explore challenges and<br />
issues of research methods. Submission of the thesis to<br />
the advisor in the penultimate week of classes is required.<br />

SS 239 Death and Dying (4 SH)<br />
An interdisciplinary course which brings together the<br />
writings of experts in a variety of fields dealing with the<br />
complex and sensitive topic of death and dying. Topics<br />
include the social and historical meanings of death in<br />
cultural context, changing personal attitudes, the personal<br />
experience related to grief and widowhood, as well as the<br />
moral dilemmas of suicide, euthanasia, abortion and the<br />
right to die.<br />
SS 322 Adulthood and Aging (4 SH)<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): PS 101<br />
Semester Offered: Spring even years<br />
This course examines the processes and consequences of<br />
an increasingly aging population. It focuses on the U.S.,<br />
but considers this phenomenon in other societies as well.<br />
Students will consider changes in the individual, social<br />
environment and institutions, including the growth of<br />
retirement communities, group differences, social services<br />
and social policies. Cross-listed as PS 322.<br />
SS 330 Juvenile Delinquency (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Spring<br />
This course on will objectively present diverse views and<br />
perspectives of juvenile delinquency and its interdisciplinary<br />
nature. This course offers an introduction to the field of<br />
juvenile delinquency and explores the concepts, theories,<br />
social, community and environmental influences and the<br />
justice system, as they relate to juvenile crime. Cross-listed<br />

SS 334 Methods of Field Research (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): PS 204 recommended<br />
This course focuses on the acquisition of skills in social<br />
research and their practical application. Students will be<br />
supervised in actual field research.<br />
