HI 230 History of the Middle East/History of Islam (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall odd 4th year<br />
A survey of this turbulent region of the world, beginning<br />
with the earliest traces of civilization in Mesopotamia<br />
through the various empires that have come and gone,<br />
including the Persians, Greeks, Romans and the Muslim<br />
empires, to the present day, with the establishment of the<br />
state of Israel and the impact of the world’s demand for<br />
oil on this region. Themes include religious developments,<br />
political changes and economic impact.<br />
HI 234 Renaissance and Reformation, 1350-1648 (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Spring odd years<br />
A study of the period from the beginning of the Renaissance<br />
to the end of the Thirty Years’ War. This era gave<br />
the western world its most enduring cultural masterworks,<br />
redefined the relationship between church and state and<br />
witnessed unremitting wars for the cause of religion.<br />
HI 236 Ancient Mediterranean History (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Spring even years<br />
An in-depth examination of the birthplace of western<br />
civilization, beginning with the ancient Mesopotamians<br />
of 2500 BC, the ancient Egyptians, spanning the Greek<br />
civilizations of the ancient era, the Phoenicians, Etruscans<br />
and Romans, to the passing of the classical world in the<br />
fourth and fifth centuries AD.<br />
HI 240 History of Medieval Europe (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall even years<br />
An in-depth examination of Europe from the fading of<br />
the Western Roman Empire, covering political, social,<br />
economic, military and maritime developments up to<br />
the waning of the Middle Ages during the 13th and 14th<br />
centuries AD.<br />
HI 250/350/450 Internship in History (1-5 SH)<br />
Internships are academic courses that take place in professional<br />
work settings and call for the application of concepts<br />
learned in the classroom. Students gain on-the-job experience<br />
under supervision by working directly with a manager in a<br />
business or not-for-profit organization. Students are required<br />
to complete 75 hours of work for each credit hour registered<br />
and earned. An Internship Application must be completed<br />
and filed with the Office of Career Services and Internships.<br />
HI 303 The Napoleonic Wars (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall even 4th years<br />
This course actually begins with the events leading up to<br />
the French Revolution of 1789 and covers the long series of<br />
European wars that resulted, up to Napoleon’s final defeat<br />
at Waterloo in 1815 and the settlement following his exile<br />
to St. Helena. This will be an in-depth study of the political,<br />
social, economic, military and naval developments, to<br />
gain a full understanding of this turbulent, critical era of<br />
European history.<br />
HI 304 The American Civil War (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Spring even 4th year<br />
This course examines the developments and controversies<br />
that led up to the U.S. Civil War, along with a study of the<br />
course of the war itself, the major personalities involved, an<br />
analysis of both the confederate and Federal governments,<br />
societies and economies. It continues with an examination<br />
of some of the repercussions of the war, at home and on<br />
the battlefield, as well as after the fighting ended.<br />
HI 305 The History of Women (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Spring even 4th year<br />
This course provides an in-depth analysis of the role of<br />
women throughout history both the cultural expectations<br />
and the reality, at different times and places throughout<br />
human history beginning with the 17th and 18th centuries<br />
in Europe, when ideas of equality germinated, to the<br />
present day, when the efforts to gain equality continue<br />
worldwide. Examinations of the status of women in different<br />
modern cultures are also a major part of this course,<br />
which covers historical, social, economical and cultural<br />
aspects of women in the world.<br />
HI 311 Ohio History (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall odd 4th year<br />
The course covers the history of the state of Ohio from the<br />
original settlement of the Native Americans and first French<br />
explorers to the present day, including westward expansion<br />
and wars with the Native Americans, the state’s experiences<br />
with the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement.<br />
In this course, a broad range of issues are examined, from<br />
politics, society, environmental concerns and other issues<br />
pertaining to the history and development of the state.<br />
HI 322 World War II (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall odd 4th year<br />
This course will cover the broad scope of the war, from its<br />
European roots in World War I and the peace settlement at<br />
Versailles in 1918, and include the attempts by the Japanese<br />
to take advantage of the civil war in China to conquer<br />
Manchuria, the rise of Mussolini and the Italian Fascists and<br />
Hitler and the Nazis of Germany. It will include a study of<br />
those far right regimes, as well as the development of the<br />
imperialistic, militaristic regime that gained power in Japan.<br />
The rising tensions of the late 1920s and early 1930s will be<br />
covered, including the outbreak of warfare in the Far East,<br />
the Spanish Civil War, the UK policy of appeasement and<br />
the beginning of the European war in 1939. Included will<br />
be the entry of the USSR and the US into the war, both the<br />
European and Pacific theaters and the Holocaust and finish<br />
with the aftermath of VE-Day in May of 1945 and VJ-Day<br />
in August of the same year. Included will be the US atomic<br />
bomb program and the first signs of the cold war to come.<br />
163
