FR 301 French for the Professional Environment (4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): FR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

This course serves as an introduction to the professional<br />

culture of Francophone countries and societies. Students<br />

will prepare for a successful professional experience<br />

abroad or in a multinational organization in the U.S. Topics<br />

and learning outcomes will include: creating a resume or<br />

curriculum vita in the second language, proficiency in basic<br />

professional correspondence, familiarity with different<br />

types of enterprises, organizational structures, marketing,<br />

banking and finance, accounting, the employment market,<br />

insurance, daily activities in an office, economics, transportation,<br />

information technology applications, etiquette in a<br />

variety of professional situations, shipping and customs,<br />

etc. Interactive work with visual media and IT applications<br />

is emphasized and the course will be taught primarily in<br />

the target language.<br />

FR 302 French Phonetics and Pronunciation (1 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): FR 102 or permission of instructor<br />

Exercises in the pronunciation of standard French<br />

through learning the International Phonetic Alphabet,<br />

linking of written French (graphemes) and spoken sounds<br />

(phonemes), practice of difficult phonemes, practice of<br />

intonation, etc.<br />

FR 311 French Composition (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): FR 201<br />

Concise exercises in writing. Examples: summary, close<br />

reading, developing and arguing of a thesis, transitions,<br />

conclusions à la française, business writing, email, etc.<br />

FR 320 Francophone Literatures and Cultures (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring odd 4th year<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): FR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Study, discuss and write on cultural production (literature,<br />

film, historiography, intellectual movements, particular<br />

contributions, etc.) from the many countries and societies<br />

that use French as an everyday medium of communication.<br />

FR 401 Translation Studies in French (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall odd 4th year<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): FR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Study the theory of translation. Put the theory into practice<br />

through translation from and into French of literary, business,<br />

technical and academic texts.<br />

FR 402 Francophone Intellectual History (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring odd 4th year<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): FR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Study, discuss and write on such periods and movements<br />

as the Ancien Régime, Middle Ages, Renaissance, French<br />

Revolution, Neo-classicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism,<br />

Modernism, Feminism, Existentialism, etc.<br />

FR 410 Francophone Literatures in English Translation (3<br />

SH)<br />

Study, discuss and write on translations into English of such<br />

canonical writers as Voltaire, Molière, Hugo, Balzac, Stendhal,<br />

Flaubert, Baudelaire, Zola, Proust, Camus, Sartre, etc.<br />

FR 411 Francophone Women Writers and Filmakers (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring even 4th year<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): FR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Study, discuss and write on the important contributions to<br />

culture by such women as Marie de France, Madame de<br />

Lafayette, George Sand, Simone de Beauvoir, Simone Weil,<br />

Anne Hébert, Gabrielle Roy, Simone Schwartz-Bart, Colette,<br />

Assia Djebar, Eléonore Faucher, Marguerite Duras, etc.<br />

FR 420 Francophone Visual Arts, Music, Architecture (3<br />

SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring even 4th year<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): FR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Study, discuss and write on the visual arts, music, architecture,<br />

artists, composers, styles, etc., that have come out of<br />

France and Francophone societies. Examine the role these<br />

have played in the formation of culture.<br />

FR 421 Francophone Cinema (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall odd 4th year<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): FR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Study, discuss and write on the history of film in France,<br />

major film producers, influential movements, famous performers,<br />

significant films, documentaries and lesser-known<br />

films produced in Francophone countries and societies.<br />

FR 170-79/270-79/370-79/470-79 Special Topics in French<br />

(4 SH)<br />

Study, discuss and write on topics of particular interest<br />

to students in advanced standing. Examples of topics:<br />

Colonization and decolonization, Québécois culture, focus<br />

on a single writer or filmmaker, advanced grammar, French<br />

Feminism, Modernism, etc.<br />
