PO 311 Politics of Developing Countries (4 SH)<br />

A comparative analysis of political institutions, processes<br />

and issues in selected countries of Africa, Asia, Latin<br />

America and the Middle East. Topics include constitutional<br />

structures, legislative, executive and judicial processes,<br />

political party systems, electoral systems and domestic<br />

and foreign policies.<br />

PO 320 Constitutional Law (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

A study of the scope of federal powers, separation of<br />

powers and the federal system, the Bill of Rights, due<br />

process and equal protection. Cross-listed as CJ 324 and<br />

LG 324.<br />

PO 321 International Organization and Law (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring even years<br />

An examination of international organizations and<br />

international law in the global arena. The course explores<br />

the characteristics and functions of various international<br />

organizations, including the United Nations and its related<br />

agencies and analyzes the evolution, scope and impact of<br />

international law. Emphasis will be placed on the role of<br />

international organizations and law as they relate to major<br />

issues including armed conflict, human rights, international<br />

trade and poverty.<br />

PO 330 Legislative Process (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall even 4th year<br />

An examination of the development and functioning of<br />

Congress and the legislative process. Topics include the<br />

powers and responsibilities of Congress, Congress’s role in<br />

policy making, Congressional leadership and committees<br />

and Congress’ relationship with the other branches of<br />

government, political parties and interest groups.<br />

PO 331 Judicial Process (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring odd years<br />

An examination of the development and functions of the<br />

judicial system in the United States and the role of courts<br />

in the policy process. Topics include theories of law and<br />

jurisprudence, the structure of the judiciary, civil and<br />

criminal procedures, judicial selection and decision-making<br />

and the impact of courts on the legislative and executive<br />

branches.<br />

PO 333 American Presidency (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring odd years<br />

An examination of the development and functioning of<br />

the office of the presidency. Topics include the powers and<br />

responsibilities of the president, presidential elections, the<br />

president’s impact on domestic and foreign policy and the<br />

president’s relationship with Congress, the bureaucracy<br />

and the American people.<br />

PO 340 Political Parties and Interest Groups (4 SH)<br />

An examination of the development, structure and function<br />

of political parties and interest groups in the United<br />

States. Special emphasis on the interrelationships between<br />

political parties and interest groups and governmental<br />

institutions, the policy process, public opinion and voting<br />

behavior.<br />

PO 341 Public Administration (4 SH)<br />

An examination of the basic principles and practices of<br />

administration in the public sector. Topics include administrative<br />

structures and organizations, intergovernmental<br />

relations, models of organization and decision-making,<br />

budgeting and financial management, personnel administration,<br />

ethics and leadership and the implementation of<br />

public policy in the federal system.<br />

PO 490 Senior Seminar (4 SH)<br />

An intensive, senior-level investigation of a selected topic in<br />

the field of political science. The course involves reviewing<br />

past research, developing and executing a research agenda<br />

and writing a research paper.<br />

PR 101 Introduction to Philosophy (4 SH)<br />

An examination of some classical philosophical problems,<br />

including the existence and nature of the external world,<br />

the existence and nature of God, the relationship between<br />

appearance and reality and the possibility of true knowledge.<br />

PR 111 Issues in Western Culture (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall and Spring<br />

An introduction to the values, structures, conflicts, assumptions<br />

and tendencies that have characterized cultures in the<br />

West during the past three thousand years. Such issues as<br />

human’s relationship to Nature, the meaning of heroism<br />

and the relationship between man and woman will be<br />

explored in both classic and contemporary texts.<br />

PR 238 World Religions (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

The course will introduce students to several of the world’s<br />

major religious traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism,<br />

Taoism, Confucianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The<br />

course includes information about the founding figures,<br />

beliefs, rituals, concepts of the ultimate, social roles, moral<br />

codes and the histories of each respective tradition.<br />
