EDC 324 Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Problems<br />

(3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

This course involves the assessment of children’s reading<br />

problems. Standardized and informal reading assessment<br />

tools are demonstrated, discussed and applied in<br />

classroom and individual settings. Once reading difficulties<br />

are identified, the course builds on enhancing children’s<br />

reading ability through case-based instructional methods<br />

and strategies. A written project and portfolio requires the<br />

practical application of concepts learned in class.<br />

EDC 325 Reading, Writing Workshop (3 SH)<br />

In this course students will participate in the process of<br />

critically reading contemporary tradebooks, engaging in<br />

discourse and responding in literature journals. Writing<br />

activities will include topic generation, rough drafts, peer<br />

editing, portfolio development and publication.<br />

EDC 330 Introduction to Students with Exceptional Learning<br />

Needs (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall and Spring<br />

This course will introduce teacher education candidates<br />

to the diverse needs of students with special needs.<br />

Candidates will learn the requirements, mandates of<br />

IDEA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.<br />

They will become familiar to the various exceptionalities<br />

of students populating regular education classrooms as<br />

well as in special programs. The course is commensurate<br />

with the dispositional requirement and the conceptual<br />

framework where professional teachers are committed<br />

that “all students can learn.”<br />

EDC 340 Educational Media and Technology (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall and Spring<br />

This course introduces the student to current educational<br />

technology and role that technology plays in supporting<br />

student achievement. Students learn to design and produce<br />

instructional material that incorporates technology. A<br />

hands-on project-based approach enables the learner to<br />

gain both knowledge and skills regarding recent technologies.<br />

Students explore a variety of software, hardware and<br />

internet options to integrate into today’s classroom in order<br />

to advance learning and support student growth.<br />

EDC 412 Critical Analysis of Children’s Literature<br />

(3 SH)<br />

As an advanced study of book evaluation, literary criticism,<br />

children’s book publishing, awards and current trends in<br />

the field, this course requires extensive critical reading. It<br />

is designed to improve the ability to discern quality books<br />

and illustrations, to acquire a literary canon and apply it<br />

across genres. Exposure to the scholarship of literary critics<br />

and employment of criteria established by their body of<br />

work will be required.<br />

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION (EDE)<br />

EDE 304 Child Development and Learning (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

This course prepares students who use the knowledge of<br />

how children develop from birth through early childhood<br />

in planning educational programs. Students learn to devise<br />

learning episodes that embrace a variety of learning styles,<br />

cultural differences and developmental levels of children.<br />

This course examines the role of the family in child development<br />

and considers the readiness factors relevant to<br />

preschool and kindergarten programs. Current trends and<br />

practices such as inclusive and diversity programs in early<br />

childhood education are investigated.<br />

EDE 306 Curriculum Development and Implementation<br />

in Early Childhood Education (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

This course addresses curriculum design appropriate for<br />

the affective, cognitive, physical and social stages of the<br />

preschool child through early primary grades. This course<br />

provides a knowledge core in developmental theory,<br />

content knowledge, inclusion and methods of presenting<br />

materials in an interdisciplinary program. Teacher candidates<br />

will plan, teach and assess lessons appropriate to<br />

early childhood audiences. The integral role of the parent<br />

as an educational partner is examined.<br />

EDE 307 Fine Arts in Early Childhood Education (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Teacher candidates will demonstrate current knowledge<br />

of and the ability to develop and implement meaningful<br />

integrated experiences in the curriculum areas of the fine<br />

arts including art, music, drama and movement.<br />

EDE 308 Family and Community Relations (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

This course is designed to help teacher candidates understand<br />

the child in the context of family and community.<br />

Teacher candidates will become familiar with social and<br />

health services available for families in the community.<br />

The course will provide opportunities to demonstrate<br />

knowledge of basic health, safety and nutritional needs<br />

of young children. Students will acquire an understanding<br />

of the interrelationships among the child’s exposure to<br />

cultures, language and through the function of the home<br />

in language development. Students will experience working<br />

with interdisciplinary, interagency and intra-agency teams<br />

of professionals.<br />
