EDA 331 Planning for Instruction (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

This course will enable teacher education candidates to<br />

learn and practice instructional management strategies<br />

including classroom management, lesson planning,<br />

assessment for instructional planning, materials available<br />

for effective instruction, the use of textbooks and supplemental<br />

materials, unit planning and the implementation<br />

of the Ohio Content Standards for instructional planning.<br />

EDA 401 Content Specific Methods (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Math and Science – Fall; Language Arts<br />

and Social Studies – Spring<br />

Students will work with a specialist who is a professional<br />

teacher in their content area and plan lessons, assessments,<br />

classroom organization materials, content standards and<br />

techniques for effective instruction and learning in each<br />

of the following separate areas: english/language arts,<br />

integrated social studies, mathematics and life sciences.<br />

EDA 412 Adolescent/Young Adult Field Experience II (2 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): A grade of B or better in EDA 312 and<br />

successful completion of all requirements in Gate A<br />

This field is an intensive experience through which students<br />

will demonstrate their abilities to plan and execute lessons<br />

in their content area. They will demonstrate the use of<br />

technology in teaching and learning episodes. Students<br />

should be given the opportunity to practice in inclusive<br />

clinical settings that reflect culturally, linguistically and<br />

academically diverse systems.<br />

EDA 440-42 Student Teaching: Adolescent/Young Adult<br />

(9 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): All professional education coursework<br />

and successful completion of all requirements in Gate B<br />

Student teaching is the culminating professional semester<br />

for the program. It is a full semester with a full school day<br />

supervised experience in selected area schools. Students<br />

will work with master teachers who will assist in assessing<br />

candidates’ progress as they practice teaching in adolescent/young<br />

adult classrooms in their content area. A grade<br />

of B or better must be attained in EDE 440-42 and EDE 443<br />

in order to be recommended for licensure.<br />

EDA 443 Seminar and Project for Adolescent/Young Adult<br />

(3 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): All professional education coursework<br />

and successful completion of all requirements in Gate B<br />

Students will produce lesson plans and must successfully<br />

complete an impact on student learning project. Other<br />

topics will be addressed as needed. A grade of B or better<br />

must be attained in EDE 440-42 and EDE 443 in order to<br />

be recommended for licensure.<br />

EDUCATION - COMMON COURSES (EDC)<br />

EDC 201 Foundations of Education (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall and Spring<br />

This course deals with content and experiences in the<br />

sociological, philosophical and historical foundations of<br />

education. Students will examine current issues in education<br />

with respect to traditional education, foundations and<br />

current practices. This course is taught using a cooperative<br />

learning model of teaching and learning.<br />

EDC 225 Voices of Diversity (2 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall and Spring<br />

Voices of Diversity coursework will support pre-service<br />

teachers in developing proficiencies to work with students<br />

from diverse backgrounds to ensure that all students<br />

have the opportunity to learn. This course will provide<br />

the opportunity to explore personal values and attitudes<br />

toward diversity. The theoretical component will examine<br />

the issues of diversity in the classroom. Field experience<br />

and examination of educational materials will enhance the<br />

students’ understanding of diversity.<br />

EDC 230 Educational Psychology (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall and Spring<br />

This course is a study of psychological learning theories<br />

and their application to the classroom. Topics under study<br />

include cognitive and linguistic development, the development<br />

of self, social skills and morality, group differences,<br />

individual differences and special needs, learning and cognitive<br />

processes, knowledge construction, high-level thinking<br />

skills, behaviorist views of learning, social cognitive views<br />

of learning, motivation theory and instructional strategies.<br />

EDC 300 Ohio History (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall odd every 4th year<br />

A history of Ohio designed to explore famous Ohioans, their<br />

contribution to the United States, the Native American<br />

cultures that existed in Ohio, the current cultures, ethnic<br />

groups and races predominant in Ohio and the events<br />

that occurred in Ohio during major events impacting the<br />

direction and current status of the nation. Students will<br />

study geography, economics, government and citizenship<br />

as each relates to the State of Ohio.<br />

EDC 321 Phonetic Approaches to Reading (3 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

This course deals with letter-sound correspondences,<br />

segmenting processes, spelling, morphology and syllabication.<br />

Word pronunciation, vocabulary building and<br />

comprehension are highlighted. Effective application of<br />

phonetic strategies, understanding diacritical markings,<br />

English grammar, structural analysis and context are<br />

covered.<br />
