CM 240 Language in America (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall odd years<br />

An examination of the nature and variety of the English<br />

language in the United States. Among the topics to be<br />

considered are the sound system, aspects of grammar and<br />

syntax, regional dialects and Black English and the social<br />

and psychological factors affecting the acquisition and use<br />

of language.<br />

CM 241 Mass Media (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring even years<br />

A survey of the forms and uses of contemporary mass<br />

communications and an introduction to some of the<br />

economic, political and cultural issues that have arisen in<br />

response to the media.<br />

CM 250/350/450 Internship in Communication (1-5 SH)<br />

Students are required to complete 75 hours of work for<br />

each credit hour registered and earned. An Internship<br />

Application must be completed and filed with the Office<br />

of Career Services and Internships.<br />

CM 303 Interviewing (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall even years<br />

This course is intended for students who wish to understand<br />

interviewing from a communication perspective. The focus is<br />

on reviewing and applying the theory and research related to<br />

the multifaceted process of interviewing and is designed to<br />

fulfill a number of objectives. The basic objective is to create<br />

an awareness of interviewing as a method of investigation;<br />

a method of acquiring information. The method may be as<br />

standardized as surveying or as flexible as ethnography. A<br />

second goal is to help the student in developing the analytic<br />

and communication skills required for effective interviewing.<br />

These goals may be achieved by applying the readings and<br />

discussions to role plays, projects and tests.<br />

CM 304 Advanced Public Speaking (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring odd years<br />

Advanced techniques in oral persuasion with emphasis on<br />

rhetorical organization, research techniques and effective<br />

presentation.<br />

CM 320 Principles of Public Relations (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring odd years<br />

This course offers an overview of basic public relations (PR)<br />

concepts and techniques used by business, government<br />

and non-profit organizations. Students will read about and<br />

discuss various theories, strategies and techniques of public<br />

relations including, but not limited to, issues management,<br />

image management, employee communications, community<br />

relations, media relations and crisis communications.<br />

Students will also experiment with public relations and<br />

communication skills such as planning selectively targeted<br />

messages, learning various PR writing styles, working with<br />

reporters and staging special events.<br />

CM 335 Tower News II (4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): EN 101 or EN 102, sophomore status<br />

The Tower News course is a hands-on course involving the<br />

writing, editing and production of the student newspaper.<br />

The newspaper is an opportunity for all majors to develop<br />

their professional skills by expressing their voices, practice<br />

their writing skills, engaging in interviews, developing their<br />

business skills and recording history. Note: CM 225 and<br />

CM 325 are repeatable up to a total of 12 semester credits<br />

towards graduation.<br />

CM 342 Criticism of Film & Television (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall odd years<br />

This course will encourage students to become more<br />

engaged consumers of visual culture. In an increasingly<br />

sophisticated visual environment, both TV and Film require<br />

sharp eyes and critical minds to observe, digest and critically<br />

process the incalculable amount of information we<br />

absorb visually. Even though TV and Film are two different<br />

forms of communication, this course will focus on establishing<br />

a foundation of heightened awareness that students<br />

can apply to various forms of visual communication beyond<br />

TV and Film.<br />

CM 344 The Language of Politics and Propaganda (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring even years<br />

A study of the means of rhetorical persuasions specific to<br />

the political process with emphasis on the use of emotional<br />

and ethical appeal.<br />

CM 390 Project in Professional Writing (4 SH)<br />

Students electing the communication emphasis combined<br />

with another discipline will select a suitable topic from that<br />

discipline for research and presentation to an audience<br />

of specialists in the field. Individualized instruction will<br />

involve participation of faculty in communication and in<br />

the chosen discipline.<br />

CM 400 Senior Seminar in Communication (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

This course is the capstone course for the communication<br />

major. The student is expected to develop a written<br />

proposal for a senior thesis which may take the form of<br />

an extended essay or a series of shorter articles. Once the<br />

proposal is accepted, the student is to prepare a manuscript<br />

ready for publication. The course also includes readings and<br />

written assignments on the ethics of journalism. Students<br />

also discuss problems in research methods and in the<br />

identification of audiences.<br />
