Modern Foreign Languages: Applied<br />

Concentration<br />

Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Arts<br />

The major in modern foreign languages applied concentration<br />

prepares students for a career in today’s increasingly<br />

global economy. The program emphasizes an interactive<br />

approach to foreign language learning, the development of<br />

intercultural literacy and the acquisition of the professional<br />

skills necessary to compete in the job market. The major’s<br />

interdisciplinary structure allows students to concentrate<br />

on both foreign language learning and the pursuit of<br />

courses offered within any other major at <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

Modern foreign language: applied concentration majors are<br />

strongly encouraged to spend a semester abroad.<br />

The department of modern foreign languages provides<br />

individualized support in internship as well as in career<br />

placement.<br />

Requirements for the Major:<br />

44 semester credits including:<br />

One from the following:<br />

• FR 490 Senior Research Project (4 SH)<br />

• GR 490 Senior Research Project (4 SH)<br />

• IT 490 Senior Research Project (4 SH)<br />

• SP 490 Senior Research Project (4 SH)<br />

and MFLA Group 1 - 24 credits beyond the 100-level in one<br />

foreign language<br />

and MFLA Group 2 - 16 additional credits beyond the<br />

100-level in either another foreign language or any other<br />

major offered at <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

<strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers language courses in French,<br />

German, Italian and Spanish.<br />

Political Science<br />

Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Arts<br />

The major in political science provides students with an<br />

understanding of political institutions and processes at<br />

the local, national and international level. The curriculum<br />

exposes students to the major sub-fields of the discipline<br />

including American government, comparative politics,<br />

international relations and political philosophy. Students<br />

explore fundamental political concepts such as democracy,<br />

power, citizenship, governance and rights and they acquire<br />

research skills enabling them to understand and analyze<br />

political phenomena around the world.<br />

The program places an emphasis on the development of<br />

the student’s research, writing and critical thinking skills.<br />

The program prepares students for careers in a variety of<br />

fields including government, politics, international affairs,<br />

law, business, journalism and education. Political science is<br />

an excellent undergraduate major for students interested<br />

in attending law school after graduation.<br />

The major is designed to allow students significant flexibility<br />

in designing a course of study based upon their areas of<br />

interest. Internships and study abroad opportunities are<br />

available.<br />

A minimum of 20 upper-division semester credits in political<br />

science is required (300 or 400 level courses)<br />
