MU 107 Flute Choir (1 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): Open to any student with some flute<br />

experience, beginner to advanced.<br />

Flute Choir repertoire will be chosen from music of all<br />

eras that will be performed at one or more concerts per<br />

semester. Participation allows for non-credit. Open to the<br />

community-at-large.<br />

An introductory course on basic conducting techniques for<br />

instrumental and choral applications, including mechanics<br />

of movement, music interpretation, rehearsal techniques<br />

and performance practices.<br />

MU 114 Practicum: Making Music (4 SH)<br />

This course provides the instruction and studio equipment<br />

necessary to explore self-expression through the use of<br />

sound. Instruction assists in the basic process of making<br />

aesthetic choices of sound, as well as learning fundamental<br />

studio recording techniques. This course is designed primarily<br />

for the non-musician and does not require previous<br />

musical experience.<br />

MU 140 Fundamentals of Music (4 SH)<br />

The basic elements of music including notation, clefs,<br />

interval recognition, scale construction and key signatures.<br />

Independent study relating to methods and problems of<br />

research in the area of history and literature of music.<br />

MU 214 Practicum: Making Music II (4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MU 114<br />

Continued exploration for the non-musician into the art<br />

and craft of self-expression through sound. Slightly more<br />

sophisticated and longer compositions are encouraged.<br />

More attention is given to the critique of the works written<br />

for the class.<br />

MU 220 Intermediate Theory and Aural Communication<br />

(4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MU 140<br />

A continuation of MU 140 including sight-singing, triadic<br />

harmony, chorale harmonization and keyboard harmony.<br />

MU 221/222 Advanced Theory and Aural Communication<br />

I, II (4, 4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MU 221<br />

A two-semester course which is a continuation of MU<br />

220 including sight-singing, chromaticism and use of nonharmonic<br />

tones, modulations, contemporary notational<br />

systems and twentieth century compositional practices,<br />

analysis of melodic shape and construction and the writing<br />

of small vocal and instrumental pieces in specified forms.<br />

MU 250/350 Internship in Music (1-5 SH)<br />

An opportunity for field studies under professional<br />

supervision during the academic year and summer. Open<br />

to all students with permission. Students are required to<br />

complete 75 hours of work for each credit hour registered<br />

and earned. An Internship Application must be completed<br />

and filed with the Office of Career Services and Internships.<br />

The Medieval, Renaissance and the Baroque. History of<br />

music literature and styles of western music through 1750.<br />

MU 305 History and Literature of Music II (4 SH)<br />

The Classical and the Romantic Eras. The Viennese School<br />

through the end of the nineteenth century.<br />

MU 306 History and Literature of Music III (4 SH)<br />

Music of the twentieth century. Nineteen hundred to the<br />

present.<br />

MU 320 Theory: Counterpoint and Composition (4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MU 222<br />

Techniques of the sixteenth century. Analysis of polyphonic<br />

materials of the period; the canon and motet; the writing<br />

of voice and instrumental pieces in small forms.<br />

MU 321 Theory: Orchestration (4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MU 222<br />

A study of the nature, range and use of the instruments of<br />

the modern orchestra; score-reading and interpretation.<br />

A study of the various techniques of orchestration both<br />

conventional and contemporary; practical application<br />

through the orchestrating of piano works.<br />

MU 322 Composition (4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): MU 222<br />

A study of the methods and materials of music composition<br />

through analysis of a wide stylistic range of music<br />

scores and the writing of original works for acoustic and/<br />

or electronic media.<br />
