FR 490 Senior Research Project (4 SH)<br />

Students preparing a thesis take this course in their final<br />

semester of the year in which they are scheduled to graduate.<br />

The course will cover development of a written proposal<br />

in consultation with the faculty member of the student’s<br />

choice, weekly meetings with the thesis advisor to assess<br />

progress, develop thesis focus and explore challenges and<br />

issues of research methods. Submission of the thesis to<br />

the advisor in the penultimate week of classes is required.<br />

GEOGRAPHY (GE)<br />

GE 101 Introduction to Geography (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring odd 4th year<br />

An introductory survey of the discipline of geography.<br />

This course emphasizes the interrelationships between<br />

the physical geography of the world and the patterns of<br />

adjustments and adaptations which humans have made<br />

to the natural environment. Factors studied will include<br />

settlements, population distribution, religion and culture.<br />

GE 200 World Geography (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring odd 4th year<br />

This introductory course will teach students how to<br />

approach global analysis from a geographical perspective.<br />

Focusing on a variety of regions around the globe, students<br />

will explore the geographical structure of those regions.<br />

Special care will be taken to emphasize the connection<br />

between the geographical structure and the historical and<br />

economic development of a certain region.<br />

GERMAN (GR)<br />

GR 101 Beginning German I (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Fundamentals of written and spoken language. Emphasis<br />

is placed on vocabulary acquisition and mastery of basic<br />

grammar concepts.<br />

GR 102 Beginning German II (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 101 or permission of instructor<br />

Continuation of the study of grammar, syntax and vocabulary.<br />

Further development of speaking and writing skills and<br />

of reading facility and comprehension.<br />

GR 160/260/360/460 Individual Investigation in German<br />

(2-5 SH)<br />

An independent study course providing opportunity to<br />

pursue a topic of particular interest. Available only for<br />

students who have completed GR 102.<br />

GR 170-79/270-79/370-79/470-79 Special Topics in<br />

German (1-4 SH)<br />

Study, discuss and write on topics of particular interest to<br />

students in advanced standing. Examples of topics: Austrian<br />

culture, focus on a single writer or filmmaker, advanced<br />

grammar, German Feminism, Expressionism in visual media<br />

and literature, Fascism and the Holocaust, etc.<br />

GR 201 Intermediate German (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Fall<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 102 or permission of instructor<br />

This course focuses on the active usage of the material<br />

learned in GR 101 and 102. Communication skills are built<br />

through an interactive classroom atmosphere based on the<br />

discussion of readings and visual media.<br />

GR 210 Studies in Germanophone Contemporary Cultures<br />

(4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 201<br />

Study, discuss and write on topics of particular interest<br />

to students. Examples of topics include current events,<br />

business and economic issues, intermediate-advanced<br />

grammar through authentic texts, travel and tourism, etc.<br />

GR 220 German Conversation (4 SH)<br />

Semester Offered: Spring<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 102 or permission of instructor<br />

This course continues to build oral and written communication<br />

skills. Conversational exercises such as role-playing<br />

and short oral presentations are emphasized, as well as<br />

continued interactive work with visual media and short<br />

readings.<br />

GR 250/350/450 Internship in German (1-5 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): GR 201; and 310 (recommended)<br />

Assist students in arranging internship opportunities with<br />

multinational companies both in the U. S. and abroad. Students<br />

may take internships during the semester as well as<br />

during the summer. Students are required to complete 75<br />

hours of work for each credit hour registered and earned.<br />

An Internship Application must be completed and filed with<br />

the Office of Career Services and Internships.<br />
