LG 303 Taxes & Culture Clinic I (2 or 4 SH)<br />

Pre-Requisite(s): Sophomore standing or permission of<br />
instructor<br />
An interdisciplinary course covering basic income tax and<br />
immigration law and the Hispanic culture. Students gain<br />
a fundamental understanding of federal, state and city<br />
income tax law for low-income taxpayers. Students gain<br />
a first-hand knowledge of basic immigration law and how<br />
undocumented United States workers are handled through<br />
our system. It is a clinic course relying heavily on student<br />

LG 311 Landmark Cases in Mental Health and the Law<br />
(4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Spring odd years<br />
The purpose of Landmark Cases in Mental Health and the<br />
Law is to introduce students to the major Supreme Court<br />
cases that have decided issues in mental health and related<br />
fields. This course will be a seminar in which students will<br />
read relevant case law in areas such as: competency to<br />
stand trial, criminal responsibility, expert testimony, civil<br />
commitment, right to treatment, right to refuse treatment,<br />
capital punishment, workplace violence, etc. Additional<br />
readings will be assigned as new cases are published.<br />

LG 312 Legal Issues in Sports (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): LG 315<br />
A presentation of the basic legal issues and interpretation of<br />
the law as it applies to sports and recreation. Topics include<br />
contracts, torts, regulation of sports, legal terminology<br />
and legal principles as applied to the administration and<br />
management of sports programs. Emphasis is on identifying<br />
and analyzing legal issues, the implications of those issues<br />
and the options for limiting the liability of sports organizations.<br />

LG 315 Business Law I (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall and Spring<br />
An introduction to the legal system, with emphasis on the<br />
law as it affects business relationships. Historical, social and<br />
moral factors are examined in an attempt to convey the<br />
dynamic nature of legal rules. Topics include the creation,<br />
nature and enforcement of legal obligations; the law of<br />
contracts from common law to the Uniform Commercial<br />
Code; sales under the Uniform Commercial Code; business<br />
ethics and the law.<br />
LG 316 Business Law II (4 SH)<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): LG 315 or permission of instructor.<br />
A continuation of the study of legal principles as they<br />
affect business. Topics include real and personal property,<br />
secured transactions, commercial paper, forms of business<br />
organization, bankruptcy, securities regulation, antitrust<br />
and government regulation including environmental, consumer<br />
and employment law. This course is recommended<br />
for students planning to take the CPA examination.<br />
LG 320 Court Administration (4 SH)<br />
A study of court room preparation and procedures to assist<br />
the judge and court as applicable to the legal assistant.<br />
LG 324 Constitutional Law (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Fall<br />
A study of the scope of federal powers, separation of<br />
powers and the federal system, the Bill of Rights, due<br />
process and equal protection. Cross-listed as PO 320 and<br />
CJ 324.<br />
LG 327 Death Penalty in America (4 SH)<br />
The Death Penalty in America is a course designed to<br />
introduce students to the legal, psychological and practical<br />
aspects of the death penalty. Emphasis will be placed on<br />
the landmark Supreme Court cases and the role that mental<br />
health experts play in death penalty litigation. There will be<br />
ample opportunity for discussion and debate. Cross-listed<br />
as CJ 327.<br />
LG 331 Judicial Process (4 SH)<br />
Semester Offered: Spring odd years<br />
An examination of the development and functions of the<br />
judicial system in the United States and the role of courts<br />
in the policy process. Topics include theories of law and<br />
jurisprudence, the structure of the judiciary, civil and<br />
criminal procedures, judicial selection and decision-making<br />
and the impact of courts on the legislative and executive<br />
branches. Crosslisted with CJ331/PO331.<br />
LG 332 International Business Law (2 SH)<br />
Pre-Requisite(s): Junior standing<br />
This course examines sources of international law by<br />
studying the legal traditions of various countries, treaties,<br />
organizations and the regulation of foreign trade. A focus<br />
on international commercial transactions emphasizes<br />
contracts and includes transportation, sales, environment,<br />
taxation, finance, money and banking, intellectual property<br />
rights and real property rights.<br />
