This dissertation focuses on two aspects <strong>of</strong> the relationship between emotion<br />

and language, (1) Namely, how language encodes emotional expressions, and (2) the<br />

role that emotion plays during the negotiating process and conflict resolution.<br />

This analysis win be made against the background <strong>of</strong> Communication Science<br />

as a discipline, and it will make recommendations on how human emotions should be<br />

dealt with as part <strong>of</strong>cooperative communication and negotiation.<br />

The dissertation will focus on four crucial problems regarding the relationship<br />

between emotion and language use:<br />

1. The neurophysiology <strong>of</strong>emotional awareness;<br />

u. The cognitive basis <strong>of</strong>learning and language use;<br />

111. How emotional expression is encoded in English<br />

The role <strong>of</strong>emotional expression during negotiation<br />

AIMS OF THE RESEARCH<br />

The twin aims <strong>of</strong>the dissertation are:<br />

i. To contribute to the understanding <strong>of</strong> the emotive aspects <strong>of</strong> language<br />

use;<br />

ii.<br />

To contribute to the study <strong>of</strong> negotiation and conflict resolution by<br />

giving an account <strong>of</strong> the role that emotion plays in these processes.<br />

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY<br />

The project is <strong>of</strong>a qualitative nature and entails the following:<br />

>- A review <strong>of</strong> cognitive literature regarding how emotion is encoded in<br />
