accept." Jackall quotes an example <strong>of</strong>how our respect for our church could be used to<br />

make us do things that we otherwise would not do. For example, some people would go<br />

to the extent <strong>of</strong>co=itting suicide because <strong>of</strong>certain religious beliefs, as in the case <strong>of</strong><br />

the September 11,2001 attack on America where it is believed the pilots who took over<br />

the flights did that for the sake <strong>of</strong> their cause, with the promise <strong>of</strong> a great life after<br />

death. Ifit were a Christian church the symbol <strong>of</strong> the cross would be used to represent<br />

the church.<br />

CARD-STACKING<br />

The device <strong>of</strong>"card-stacking" is the strategy <strong>of</strong> evading the truth by telling lies<br />

m order to win support. Some facts are underemphasized. Simple facts may be<br />

exaggerated or important facts down-played. The apartheid regime <strong>of</strong> South Africa<br />

exaggerated the separate development strategy because it was supposed to give<br />

individual nations all the rights to and benefits <strong>of</strong> self-determination, when it was<br />

actually entrenching apartheid. This requires though that one knows the background <strong>of</strong><br />

the people that one will be negotiating with.<br />

THE BANDWAGON<br />

In his explanation Jackall (1995:220) says the bandwagon device is designed to<br />

make us do things just because everybody is doing them. Many techniques and symbols<br />

are used to convince us and grand shows may be put on to get people <strong>of</strong> a certain race<br />

or religion together. One good example is what happened in South Africa before the<br />

1994 general elections when certain calls were made to the Zulus and the Afrikaners to<br />

unite by virtue <strong>of</strong> belonging to those racial groups. The main thrust is the emotion that<br />

is manipulated to drive us to the bandwagon e.g. our "fears and hatreds, prejudices and<br />
