Part-IIResults and Discussion1 H NMR (CDCl 3 )δppm: 2.50 (2H, s, CH 3, ), 7.38-7.74 (4H, m, Ar-H), 12.13 (1H, br, s,NH).4.4.2. Condensed 4-chloro-2-substitutedpyrimidinesThe condensed 4-chloro-2-substitutedpyrimidines are brown or slightly dark coloredsolid, with low melting points generally below 200 o C. These compounds are soluble inchloroform and insoluble in ethanol, methanol or hexane.Infra Red (IR) spectraIR spectra of 4-chloro-2-chloromethylthienopyrimidines, 4-chloro-2-chloroethylthienopyrimidineand 4-chloro-2-methylthienopyrimidine did not exhibits bands due toasymmetric and symmetric N-H stretching vibrations along with absence of absorptionbands around 1680-1650 due to N-H deformation vibrations. The IR spectra of ethyl 2-substituted-3,4-dihydro-5-methyl-4-oxothieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-6-carboxylates exhibiteda strong absorption band around 1730-1720 cm -1 due to C=O stretching.The 1 H NMR spectraThe1 H NMR spectra of 4-chloro-2-chloromethylthienopyrimidines, 4-chloro-2-chloroethylthienopyrimidine and 4-chloro-2-methylthienopyrimidine were taken inCDCl 3 . All the compounds showed characteristic peaks corresponding to the protons ofdifferent groups and functionalities in the molecules. The 2-methylene protons of thechloromethyl linkage appear as a singlet at around 4.4 to 4.6 ppm. Since this methylenegroup is attached to electronegative atom, the proton signal appear downfield then thenormal position. In 2-chloroethylpyrimidines, characteristic triplets were observed at 3 to4 ppm. The 2-methyl protons were observed above 2 ppm in the spectra due to presenceof two nitrogen atoms of the pyrimidine ring system. The aromatic protons were observedas a multiplet at around 7-8 ppm.The Mass spectraThe fragmentation pattern of the synthesized compounds (4-chloro-2-chloromethylthienopyrimidines),under electron impact ionization has also been studied. Manyprominent fragment ion peaks are revealed in the mass spectra of these compounds. The345
