Adverse effects include dizziness, nausea, skin-rashes,somnolence, confusion, impotence, gynecomastia, hematological effects and alteredfunction of immune system. Rarely they may cause bone marrow depression, hepatitis,and anaphylaxis. 1 Cimetidine selectively showed anti-androgen properties in a smallnumber of patients. 371.2.4. Eradication of H. Pylori Infections:H. pylori is a gram-negative rod shaped bacilli that colonizes in the mucus on the luminalsurface of gastric epithelium. H. pylori infection causes inflammatory gastritis and is aputative contributor to peptic ulcer disease, gastric lymphoma and adenocarcinoma. 1Infection may not always be causative as ulcers may recur in patients who haveundergone successful eradication treatment. 38 Double or triple antimicrobial therapies, incombination with antisecretory drugs, are being used successfully to treat peptic ulcers.Bismuth compounds are also been included in regimen probably due to theircytoprotective action. Triple therapy with metronidazole, a bismuth compound and eithertetracycline or amoxycilline for two weeks is recommended to treat H. pylori infections.However, therapeutic limitations of this triple therapy include complex regimen andrelated nausea, diarrhea and dizziness. 11.2.5. Other Agents UsedCarbenoxolone 11, an olendane derivative of glycyrrhizic acid, a compound foundnaturally in licorice is also useful in the treatment of peptic ulcer. Mechanism of action is11
