(2) Address the employees incapacitation due to physical or mental illness, injury,pregnancy, or childbirth;(3) Make necessary funeral arrangements for a family member or to attend the funeral <strong>of</strong> afamily member;(4) Provide care to a family member as a result <strong>of</strong> physical or mental illness, injury,pregnancy, childbirth, or medical, dental or optical examination or treatment;(5) Address the exposure to a communicable disease;(6) Address the adoption <strong>of</strong> a child, including any necessary requirements to complete theadoption.B. Approval Process: Normally anticipated sick leave should be requested as far in advance aspossible. In the event that the employee is compelled to request unanticipated sick leave, he/sheshould make every effort to notify his/her supervisor as soon as possible, and in no event, laterthan one (1) hour after the start <strong>of</strong> the work day and every day thereafter. If circumstancesprohibit immediate communications as stated above, the employee will report his/her absence assoon as possible and may be required to provide an explanation for the delay. Unless theemployee is on sick leave restriction, an immediate family member can report the absence. Anappropriate call-in procedure will be jointly established at the local sites to ensure that employeeshave a clear understanding as to their point <strong>of</strong> contact.C. Medical Restriction: Employees normally shall not be required to furnish a medical certificate tosubstantiate a request for approval <strong>of</strong> sick leave unless such sick leave exceeds three (3)consecutive work days. However, should the supervisor have reason to believe that the employeemay be abusing sick leave, the employee may be placed on Leave Restrictions and will beadvised in writing that a medical certificate will be required for each absence chargeable to sickleave. After six (6) months the sick leave restriction will expire. Management may reinstate therequirement for cause.D. Eligibility: Permanent and temporary employees earn sick leave. The earning rate will differbased on the type <strong>of</strong> work schedule. Intermittent employees do not earn sick leave. Full timeemployees earn four (4) hours per pay period, while part-time employees earn one (1) hour forevery twenty (20) hours in pay status.E. Restoration: Sick Leave is restored to an employee’s account following a break in servicewithout regard to the length <strong>of</strong> separation, if the employee returns to Federal employment. If sickleave was previously forfeited, it may not now be restored.F. Advancing Sick Leave: In cases <strong>of</strong> serious disability or illness, sick leave may be advanced(except for those employees serving under a limited appointment or with a specific terminationdate) for up to thirty (30) days, or equivalent for uncommon tours-<strong>of</strong>-duty, subject to the59
