living with one parent, they decreased for children living with two parents. For childrenliving with a single parent, the rate <strong>of</strong> overall Harm St<strong>and</strong>ard maltreatment increased by30%, abuse increased by 22%, <strong>and</strong> neglect increased by 36%. Figure 5–6 presents the changes since the NIS–3 in specificcategories <strong>of</strong> Harm St<strong>and</strong>ard abuse that were related to family structure. Family structurewas significantly related to the changes in rates <strong>of</strong> Harm St<strong>and</strong>ard sexual abuse <strong>and</strong>emotional abuse, while for physical abuse the relationship is statistically marginal. Hereagain, the figure indicates increased incidence rates for children living with one parent<strong>and</strong> decreased rates for those living with two parents. Rates <strong>of</strong> maltreatment for childrenwith one parent increased for Harm St<strong>and</strong>ard physical abuse by 14%, for sexual abuse by49%, <strong>and</strong> for emotional abuse by 43%. Rates in these same categories decreased forchildren living with two parents, by 24% in physical abuse, by 62% in sexual abuse, <strong>and</strong>by 48% in emotional abuse.5–27
