APPENDIX E BETWEEN-STUDY ANALYSES This appendix describes the analyses comparing the distribution of maltreatment inthe NIS–4 with its distribution in the NIS–3 and NIS–2 across a number of subgroups defined bythe characteristics of the child and family. This introduction describes the t-statistics and chisquaredtests used in the analyses. The tables that follow provide the results of all statistical teststhat support the findings given in the NIS–4 Report to Congress.To address the fact that the NIS–4 data derive from a complex sample design(stratified and multi-stage), all the computations were performed using WesVar (Westat, 2007).Comparisons of Two Estimates. Comparisons of the differences between singleestimates in two studies followed the same approach outlined in the introduction to Appendix D.That is, using the estimated rate in each study (r 1 and r 2 ) and the standard error of these rates(SE r1 and SE r2 ) as computed by WesVar, the t-statistic was then calculated as follows:√r 1 -r 2t =2SE 2 r1 + SE r2Analyses comparing single estimates from NIS–4 to a corresponding estimate froman earlier study used one-tailed tests of significance with 82 degrees of freedom for comparisonswith NIS–3 and 89 degrees of freedom for comparisons with NIS–2. 1Comparisons Involving More than Two Estimates. The chi-squared test was usedto determine whether between-study changes in incidence rates differed for different subgroups.WesVar computes a chi-squared statistic that takes account of the complex sample design, theRao-Scott approximation (RS3).
