Table 4–2. Sex Differences in Incidence Rates per 1,000 Children for EndangermentStandard Maltreatment in the NIS–4 (2005–2006)Endangerment StandardMaltreatment CategoryBoysGirlsSignificance ofDifferenceABUSE:All Abuse10.012.0mSexual Abuse1.03.8*SEVERITY OF HARM:Inferred2.53.4** The difference is significant at pp>.05).Abuse. Girls’ rate of Endangerment Standard abuse is 1.2 times that of boys. This difference is statistically marginal (p < .10).Sexual abuse. Again, girls’ greater risk of Endangerment Standard abuseessentially reflects their greater risk of sexual abuse, which is 3.8 times that of boys.Inferred Harm. Girls were significantly more likely to have inferred harmdue to Endangerment Standard maltreatment. As shown in Table 4–2, girls’ incidencerate for Endangerment Standard inferred injury is 1.4 times the boys’ rate. This pattern, which is also discussed in the Harm Standard finding in this category, is most likelyrelated to girls’ greater risk of sexual abuse. Sexual abuse and inferred injuries are linkedin that the definitions under both standards permit harm to be inferred when the evidencecited indicates that a serious form of sexual abuse occurred.Changes since the NIS–3 in the Distribution of Endangerment StandardMaltreatment Related to Child’s SexComparisons between the NIS–3 and NIS–4 revealed that changes in theincidence of one category of Endangerment Standard maltreatment and two levels ofoutcome severity were statistically related to child’s sex: emotional neglect, seriousharm, and inferred harm.4-5
