As in Figure 8–2 (which provides the corresponding information forchildren with Harm St<strong>and</strong>ard maltreatment), children are included in every maltreatmentcategory that applied to them, but they are classified into only one level <strong>of</strong> harm, basedon the most serious harm from countable maltreatment. The figure excludes fatalitiesbecause their numbers are too small to be discerned on the graph. The absolute sizes <strong>of</strong>the bars reflect the total number <strong>of</strong> children per 1,000 who experienced the maltreatmentor harm, while the portion <strong>of</strong> the bar to the left side <strong>of</strong> the graph shows number <strong>of</strong>children in the category whom CPS investigated. For each category, the label indicatesthe percentage <strong>of</strong> children the left portion <strong>of</strong> the bar represents.8–14
