As noted earlier, because <strong>of</strong> the NIShierarchical classification system, this percentage does not include all the children thatschool sentinels recognize as abused <strong>and</strong> neglected; it excludes children that school staffrecognized when other sources higher in the hierarchy also recognized those children asmaltreated.Sources that only enter the NIS through CPS investigations recognized 13%<strong>of</strong> children maltreated under the Endangerment St<strong>and</strong>ard. As described above (§7.1.1),these sources include DSS/Welfare agencies (e.g., CPS agencies in other counties orother divisions <strong>of</strong> the county welfare agency) other (non-sentinel) pr<strong>of</strong>essionals oragencies (e.g., community health clinics not affiliated with a hospital, private practicepediatricians, physicians, therapists) <strong>and</strong> all other sources (primarily the general public,such as neighbors, friends, family, anonymous callers, <strong>and</strong> the victims themselves).
