Figure 5–7 shows that rates <strong>of</strong> two specific categories <strong>of</strong> HarmSt<strong>and</strong>ard neglect changed since the NIS–3 in different ways for children living indifferent family structures. The relationship between family structure <strong>and</strong> the changes inincidence rates is significant for emotional neglect <strong>and</strong> statistically marginal for physicalneglect. <strong>Child</strong>ren with single parents had a 42% higher risk <strong>of</strong> Harm St<strong>and</strong>ard physicalneglect <strong>and</strong> a 48% higher risk <strong>of</strong> emotional neglect at the time <strong>of</strong> the NIS–4 compared totheir levels <strong>of</strong> risk during the NIS–3. Rates in these same categories decreased forchildren living with both parents, by 28% in physical neglect <strong>and</strong> by 44% in emotionalneglect.Severity <strong>of</strong> outcomes from Harm St<strong>and</strong>ard maltreatment. Figure 5–8displays the changes since the NIS–3 in the incidence <strong>of</strong> children who suffered seriousharm, moderate harm, or inferred harm that differed significantly by family structure.The incidence <strong>of</strong> children living with single parents who were seriously harmed by HarmSt<strong>and</strong>ard maltreatment increased 34%, those moderately harmed increased 25%,5–28
