The NIS unduplicates the data (so the study estimates represent eachmaltreated child only once), evaluates the case details against st<strong>and</strong>ardized definitions <strong>of</strong>abuse <strong>and</strong> neglect (so estimates are based only on “countable” children, whosemaltreatment meets the study st<strong>and</strong>ards), <strong>and</strong> weights the records (so the sample data canprovide national estimates <strong>of</strong> the numbers <strong>of</strong> maltreated children).2–5
