In <strong>the</strong>ory, a computer <strong>network</strong> can operate over any transport medium that can<br />

carry transmission signals, but a desirable level of performance and reliability is<br />

required for data transmission. There are a variety of connected and connectionless<br />

data communication media. Connected media are used for dedicated links between<br />

two or more communication devices. Wireless media use transmitters and receivers<br />

<strong>to</strong> send modulated electromagnetic waves. Connected media offer reliability and<br />

security, but are dependent on <strong>the</strong> scope of <strong>the</strong> infrastructure. Wireless media are<br />

not constrained by physical access or distance, but <strong>the</strong>y are susceptible <strong>to</strong><br />

obstruction and noise and offer no media component security.<br />

Connected Media<br />

Coaxial cable, twisted-pair cable, and optical fiber are <strong>the</strong> most common media used<br />

for connected signal transmission (see Figure 1.1).
