The backbone <strong>network</strong> is used <strong>to</strong> exchange inter-area routing<br />

information. The idea behind segmenting <strong>the</strong> <strong>network</strong> in<strong>to</strong> areas is<br />

that different routers can compute shortest path information for<br />

sections of <strong>the</strong> <strong>network</strong>, instead of requiring each router <strong>to</strong> compute<br />

<strong>the</strong> shortest path information for <strong>the</strong> entire <strong>network</strong>.<br />

Router Designations<br />

There are four different designations for routers in an OSPF <strong>network</strong><br />

(as shown in Figure 8.11):
