mirroring does just what its name says. It provides the capability to watch the packet exchange between two ports on the switch. When configured, the switch sends copies of all the traffic generated on both of the defined ports. After mirroring is set up, a packet sniffer can be attached to the mirror port, and the packet exchanges between the hosts connected to the mirrored ports can be examined. Port End-Station Density The number of end-stations a switch port can support is known as its End-Station Density (ESD) or Port Address Support (PAS). There are two methods of PAS: single port addressing and segment port addressing. Single port addressing switches have limited SAT table size and are designed to support one end-station per port. This is a method common to desktop-class switches. Desktop-class switches are designed to provide the same function as a multiport repeater or MAU except that each port is switched (its own collision domain). These switches often have limited backplane bandwidth which is shared by a several standard speed ports and a single high-speed uplink port so the switch can be uplinked to another switch (see Figure 6.10).

Desktop switches have no network or configuration management or features like VLAN support. Their appeal is the fact that they are very inexpensive in comparison to a workgroup switch or enterprise switch blade with a similar port density.
