Acknowledgments
First, I would like to thank everyone at New Riders Publishing,
particularly Karen Wachs (who made it happen), Jennifer Garrett
(who pulled it all together), David Gibson (who is responsible), Lisa
Thibault, Ami Frank Sullivan, Lunaea Hougland, Gina Brown, Sheri
Replin, and Lisa Stumpf (who made order out of it all).
I especially want to thank Allison MacFarlan, whose assistance with
each of the chapters as an editor, writer, and friend was invaluable to
me. I want to thank the technical reviewers, Mark Newcomb and Ariel
Silverstone, for their creative suggestions and comments. All of you
have made this book more accurate and readable—thanks again.
Like most projects of this sort, there is a group of people who
functioned as a test audience for the early drafts. I want to thank
those individuals who contributed their time and provided very helpful
content feedback, in particular, James Davis, Ken Germann, Claude
Brogle, Bill Friday, the folks at X2net, and my Tier 1 and Tier 2 support
staffs at ANS.
Finally, I want to thank my wife, children, and friends for being so
understanding about my absence from so many things during the last
six months; my grandfather, Ernest A. Martin Sr., for my love of
technology; my friend, John McMahon, for sharing the secret of
writing; and my mother, Mary Martin, who has made everything
possible.
This book was written on a Macintosh G3 running MachTen and MacOs
8.6, using OxTex, Alpha, and Canvas. It was later converted to
Microsoft Word, because it does not matter if it's the best tool, it only
matters that everyone has it.
