upon startup. After the LEC is configured, it must then establish a bidirectional control VCC with the LES and register its MAC address. This, in turn, initiates the creation of a unidirectional control VCC from the LES to the LEC, at which point the LEC can make and receive address resolution requests. The final event is the LEC establishing a bidirectional multicast VCC with the BUS and the BUS establishing a unidirectional multicast VCC with the LEC. This enables the LEC to send and receive Layer 3 broadcasts and local multicasts and respond to LEARP queries, which effectively completes the LEC membership into the LAN. After all the required VCCs are established, the LEC is part of the ELAN and can now exchange datagrams with other LECs and traditional LAN end-stations. Figure 6.15 illustrates the various VCCs needed for an LEC to operate in the ELAN.
