Use the cable set to build the cable appropriate to your situation, which in most cases will mean attaching a PC serial COM port with terminal emulation software to the router. The AUX port is a standard Cisco Async Serial port. It is not used for initial configuration and system messaging. It can be configured to act as a secondary console port, but it is not one by default. After you have the correct console cable for your router, you will need to use a terminal emulation package to access the CLI. Any terminal emulation package that allows access to the serial port directly (without a modem) will do. If you are using a Windows system, you can use HyperTerminal. On a Macintosh, a package called Z-Term is popular. Now, your cables are connected between the router and your PCs, and the terminal package of your choice is up and running. With the router's power on (and with no existing configuration), you can enter a carriage return, and you should see the following: % Please answer 'yes' or 'no'. Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]: If the initial dialog or some kind of output appears, you are ready to move on to configuring your router. However, if there is no output on the terminal, reset the router's power and see if the boot banner comes up.
