The Macintosh SNMP client provides several SNMP agents to collect management
information. To see the SNMP agents available to a given community name, select
the community you want to examine (in the Community List window), and select the
Open button, or if you like, just double-click on the community in which you are
interested. When the community first opens, you see a list of the available agents
(see Figure 11.22).
Figure 11.22. A top level looks at the available SNMP
agents.
To set the read/write permissions on an agent, select the agent, and set its access
permission using the radio button's in the community's window header. To view a
summary of all of the managed object data values, double click any of the agents.
This displays a summary list of the objects and their values. If you want to look at
each object individually, use the expansion arrows next to the agent name to see
the available object groups, then double click the object you want to see.
SNMP Agents for UNIX
A number of SNMP agent implementations for UNIX exist. The most common one is
the ISODE version that ships with BSD UNIX, the UCD-SNMP version from the
University of California at Davis (available at ftp://ucd-snmp.ucdavis.edu/). The
UCD-SNMP agent is a heavily modified version of the CMU-SNMP agent. There are a
number of SNMP agent variations available for UNIX and each version uses a slightly
different configuration. They all, however, come with documentation (some
documentation being better then others). The UNIX SNMP implementations also
come with a variety of SNMP tools for viewing MIBs and polling SNMP devices.
