With this configuration, because HSRP is running on both interfaces, we want to
make sure that one router acts as the primary for both groups. This is achieved by
adding the
command. The standby track tells the router to monitor its sister interface. If this
interface goes down, the HSRP member interface's priority drops by 10. When the
standby router's priority drops, it takes over. This is particularly important when
running HSRP on both interfaces. If your standby tracking priority and prempt
settings are not properly configured, you can have a situation where one router's
interface is acting as the primary for one group and the other is acting as the
primary of the other. This can be desirable if both routers have equal capabilities. If
you have a high-end router for your primary and a low-end router for backup,
however, you will want to ensure that the primary router is the correct one.
It is also possible to set up authentication for HSRP groups. This option is helpful
when a router is participating in several HSRP groups. The password is a clear text
password, which needs to be shared between the two group members.
Authentication is enabled, like other HSRP options, as a variation of the standby
command . To
display status information about HSRP groups running on the router, the user EXEC
command is provided. Here is the output from the router hegel:
