BGP is based on <strong>the</strong> vec<strong>to</strong>r distance algorithm. Routing information is<br />

sent using <strong>the</strong> AS number as <strong>the</strong> vec<strong>to</strong>r and <strong>the</strong> gateway address as<br />

distance. BGP systems exchange <strong>network</strong> reachability information<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r BGP systems. These systems do not need <strong>to</strong> be directly<br />

accessible <strong>to</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r; <strong>the</strong> only requirement is that <strong>the</strong> two systems<br />

are reachable across <strong>the</strong> <strong>network</strong>. Instead of using broadcast or<br />

multicast <strong>network</strong> facilities that are dependent on direct connectivity,<br />

BGP uses a TCP unicast (port 179), peer-<strong>to</strong>-peer-based message<br />

exchange process <strong>to</strong> distribute routing information. These exchanges<br />

are established through a multistage communication process known<br />

as <strong>the</strong> BGP finite state machine (see Figure 8.17).
